Work As Usual

Apr 20, 2009 22:14

Jean Grey sat at what she considered her 'desk', looking over the notes she'd jotted down after her last session with Sam. Working as usual. Frowning, she reached up, pressing the fingers of her right hand against her temple. Her head was beginning to throb and she knew that it was because she hadn't ventured far from the med lab and honestly she'd ( Read more... )

Jono didn't have any particular reason to be in the med bay. But there were plenty of other reasons to be around there. Still, he paused outside to stick his head in and see if anybody of interest was in.

He paused at the admonishment, then drew himself up. Sorry, ma'am. Wasn' 'spectin' to be noticed. She felt familiar. A little, at least.

Jean's brows furrowed, and she was taken completely off guard by being telepathically talked to.

She turned in her seat and her gaze fell on the young (well as far as she could tell) man standing in the doorway. "Oh it's alright," she finally stated, her head tilting a bit to the side as she continued to study him.

"And... Please don't call me ma'am. It makes me feel old. I'm Jean," She offered him a smile.

He normally tried to warn, but he was a little too used to being around people who knew he couldn't actually speak. And, well, there wasn't really a good way to warn most people.

Jono straightened up self-consciously, corners of his eyes tipping up a bit. Me mum'd like t' know she managed to drill some sorta manners int' me, he said, accent thickening a bit. British, by way of Bow Bells, if she knew the area. Jono Starsmore. He paused, then offered his hand. Wouldn' be Jean Grey, would it? She didn't look too much like the one he knew, but that hardly meant anything here.

Jean chuckled, "I'm sure she'd be quite proud of you." And while Jean didn't know where Bow Bells was, she did appreciate the sound of his accent.

Women normally liked that kind of thing.

"It's very nice to meet you Jono...." She replied as she reached out and grasped his hand within her own and shook it.

Her smile faltered a bit, and once she realized it was, quickly forced it back. "Yes, I am.... Let me guess. I'm a movie character from your world." She's not trying to be rude, it's just a little disconcerting to have so many people know who she was and she was clueless as to their identities.

Like t' think so. Not that he knew. His parents hadn't spoken to him since he'd manifested.

Pleasure's mine. The faltering smile got a raised eyebrow, then he chuffed out a laugh. It was a fully mental sound and his chest didn't move at all. No, Ms. Grey. Not a movie character. You were one of me teachers.

"Oh?" Jean asked, her eyes widening a little bit, and then she smiled. "Well hopefully I was a good teacher who happened to teach you a wealth of knowledge which you happened to obtain."

He tapped his forehead. Mos'ly the powers stuff. 'Ad some other teachers at the Massachusetts Academy. Seem t' 'ave done well enough.

"Really?" Jean asked, obviously surprised. "In my world the Professor is still helping me with my powers."

Jono blinked at that and shook his head. You've 'ad control fer years back in me world. Definitely fer the pas' few years.

When she was alive, at least.

"Well, that's reassuring. Hopefully it turns out like that in my world too." She smiles, though still can't shake the feeling of how weird it is to be talking about her other self... If that's what it could even be called.

She really doesn't need to know she dies in your world Jono - it might seriously freak her out.

She clears her throat, and shifts the conversation in another direction. "How long have you been here?"

He's not going to tell her. That really wouldn't help at all.

Hope so too, Jono offers, then tilts his head. Dunno. Was in the firs' group what came outta the pods, so it's been a while. But it ain't like Stacy gives us a calendar or anythin' like 'at.

"Oh," Jean sighed a little but smiled at Jono. "Well that's a little odd... But I suppose it's something that I'll need to deal with."

She paused, and reached up, brushing her hair back behind her ear. "Have you learned anything? I mean about why we're here? Stacy hasn't said much about that..."

Guess I could ask 'er how long we've been 'ere. Just reckon she'd tell me it was classified. Like Stacy said about so much else. As fer why we're here...jus' that we're the crew. An' the pod caverns we came outta house thousands of others 'at she could wake at any time. Maybe friends. Maybe enemies. Can't tell. An' I don' know 'bout you, but I can't feel any minds down there, so she's probably got 'em blocked off some'ow.

"Well, I can sense that there are beings there... But nothing solid as in feelings or thoughts." Jean frowned, not really sure how to feel about the blocks that Stacy was obviously putting up in certain areas of the ship.

What if Scott or her other team mates were in one of those things?

She shook her head. "It seems to me that Stacy seems to like keeping us in the dark..."

Jono nodded. Don' surprise me. Might be 'cause I'm pretty well shielded, too. Otherwise, get a massive bloody headache offa Stacy. And while Brainy might be able to figure out a painkiller for him to take, it's just as easy to avoid needing it. An' yeah, she probably does. Reckons she's protectin' us or summat.

Jean frowned again. She knew her own blocks weren't up to where they were suppose to be, though... It could be contributed to her working a lot with Sam and just the general stress of finding out she was now on a space ship away from all the people she loved.

"I suppose that could be it...." She paused, feeling a bit self conscious. "Do you think... That maybe you could show me some of the things I taught you?"
