Death Throes

The battle raged on, but while the crew fought valiantly, the Ohm continued to come at them at full force.

Something had to be done, or they would soon be overrun.

Cargn, ever thinking of the larger picture, had released his familiar, Unit XXVI, at the beginning of the battle. It flew high above the battlefield, watching, waiting, searching for one ( Read more... )

A node.

Nanoha had read Cargn's reports, and this was the thing that was responsible for the destruction of worlds. For the destruction of universes. The memories of Mid-Childa's violent destruction were still deep in her mind, and there was no doubt: They needed to destroy this thing now.

Her body ached even after having downgraded to Blaster-1, and she knew that - especially with Rein's departure - there was no way she could physically stand to use Blaster-3... not even her determination would see her through that one. But there was something she could do: The air was thick and heavy with spent magic. She would use that.

"Are you ready, Raising Heart?"

It answered her as it always did, faithful and at her side. "I can still fight, My Master."

"Okay." Nanoha raised the weapon - cracks hissing with steam visible on its golden surface - and pointed it at the fleet of Ohm with trembling hands that she willed to keep still for just a little moment longer. "Just... a little bit more, Raising Heart. That's all we need." And when the Device next spoke, it said a mere two words:

"Starlight Breaker."

Light began to gather at the front of Raising Heart's spearhead as Nanoha carefully aimed at the spot Cargn had indicated as the location of the Node, ignoring the bloodsmears left on the handle as she did so. The steadily growing orb bathed the entire area in a piercing magenta light as it absorbed all of the residual energy in the area.

Starlight Breaker used the remnants of expended magic and energy as its fuel; there had been quite a bit of energy expended in the hours they'd been fighting. The sphere swelled, now bigger than Nanoha herself was, now the size of a large car, and bigger still. The magic coursing through her bruised and battered body hurt, but she wasn't done. They weren't done.

If she couldn't fight the Node, she could clear the way for those who could.

"Blaster-1, Starlight Breaker: Break... SHOOT!"

She fired, and a massive magenta beam tore the sky in two.
