A Friendly Game of Chess [Closed]

It had taken him a day or two to finally get the spare time, but Kirk had finally managed to get a decent recreation of the Enterprise's recreation room in the Sensoriums. Not that that was hard, considering Stacy could pluck the images from his memory. It was just as he remembered leaving it. Various games set up on different tables. Mats in one ( Read more... )

Spock had not completely considered the ways in which this Kirk's Enterprise may have differed from the one he knew. The facsimile provided by the Sensoriums was, however, essentially the same, except in minor details of design.

The chess set, however, looked exactly like the set he and Kirk had used in their own timeline. It was strangely reassuring. "Captain," he said by way of greeting as he seated himself opposite the older man.

"It is fortunate that you have found time for relaxation, given the current state of affairs on the ship."

There was still something slightly off that Kirk couldn't quite put his finger on - aside from Spock looking younger, anyway. Still, he knew him and he still seemed to be the same, logical Vulcan. He grinned in reply. "Well, a captain can't work all the time or else he'll go mad. White or black? And how have you been settling in?"

"Black," Spock replied immediately. White, of course, had the first move, and it would give him an opportunity to assess Kirk's strategy. "I have volunteered my services to the engineering and science departments and received favorable response so far. The crew members I have met seem highly competent if less than disciplined, which is only to be expected given the diversity."

Kirk chuckled and nodded, settling on his elbows as he examined the board. After a moment he moved a pawn forward - a fairly standard but versatile opening move. "Glad to hear it. I can't begin to tell you what a relief it is to have someone from back home here. The crew... diverse as they are... tend to have problems from time to time. Still, you know me. No such thing as a no-win situation."

Kirk looks up from the now-finished game. His conversation with Spock had given him quite a bit to mull over. However, a smile crosses his features and he stands, gesturing to Aang. "Aang! Of course! Please come in."

Kirk settles back into his chair, folding his hands in front of him. "It's three-dimensional chess. A descendant of the original chess. It's probably similar to this Pai Sho - however, it's the shape of the piece that tells you how they can move. If you like, I could teach you to play some time."

Kirk could use another opponent besides Spock, after all. Even if Spock is damn good.
