There are ghosts on the ship, apparitions of those long dead and those still alive. They aren't real and yet, may as well be for how they can hurt the crew and affect the physical environs of the ship. In this case, these malingering spirits aren't haunting particular places--they're haunting specific people.

What happens on Obs Deck is a clear indication of that.

One moment, she's talking with someone else casually.

The next moment, something invisible scratches her arm, right through the plantsuit.
