He hadn't realized just how much he'd missed tinkering on ships until he'd gone some time here without doing anything like it.  Growing up, Luke had always been up to his elbows in some project or another, fixing droids for his uncle or modifying the speeder he used; later on, the tinkering turned into working on real ships like his X-Wing, the ( Read more... )

A soft, scuffing noise of a shoe against the floor was hopefully enough to alert Luke to the nervous young girl behind him. Looking for Steve had been... taxing, to put it kindly. Still, she'd thought that maybe he'd be in the hanger, considering how much he liked mechanical things and the fact that he'd not been in the sensoriums.

She bit her thumb before speaking, and mentally sighed. Why was she the one chasing after him, when he'd been the one to kiss her? How unfair was all that? "E... Excuse me," Miku addressed Luke's back and bowed deeply. "I'm... I'm looking for someone." Augh, talking to strangers made her stomach twist into fearful knots. "Maybe you've seen him?"

That soft scuffle gave him enough warning to keep a grip on his tool and lean up to peer at the girl over the edge of the access bay, then slide out and sit on the edge of the drive casing, looking at her. "Maybe, a few people have come through here," Luke said kindly. "Who is it you're looking for?"

Miku didn't lift her head, so Luke found himself talking to the top it, and Miku nearly spoke into her knees.. "My..." she paused. "Friend. He's really tall," well, taller than her, "with red hair? His name is Steve. Actually," Miku lifted her head and smiled, still brimming with nerves. "He... might not have given you his name."

She sighed and looked down, "It's really important that I find him, though."

Luke's smile was immediate and brilliant. "Steve? Steve Burnside? Yeah, I know him, he's--" Luke thought better about saying he's like my own son; the girl was already shy enough and that'd only make her clam up more, and that was definitely the last thing he wanted. "He's not here." He jumped down from the top of the ship, using the Force to make his landing light on his toes, like a dancer.

"He hasn't come by here recently," Luke said. "We can go look for him if you like, though. I could use the break."

"Oh." Miku puffed out her cheeks in consternation. Where on Stacy was he? Certainly, she could try putting up a message on the channel, but the idea of airing what was her private business made her skin want to break out into hives.

Especially since she wasn't very sure that he'd even respond. "Is that really okay?" Even if he needed a break, going after another sullen, gangly teenager probably wasn't restful. And that's what a lot of people needed right now: rest.

"It's really fine. Steve and I are pretty close." Luke held out a greasy hand, looked at it, and thought better of it, instead bowing from the waist. "Luke Skywalker--just call me Luke."

Miku straightened (even she could only talk to her knees for so long) and smiled, though it looked a bit pained. Just like Steve, Luke was asking her to be more familiar than she was comfortable. Still she nodded, not wanting to rock the boat any more than her interruption already had. "My name is Hin--" she caught and quickly corrected herself. If he were anything like Steve, then she'd just confuse him. "Miku Hinasaki. It's very nice to meet you, Skywalker-san."

Old habits were so hard to break. "Thank you for helping me."

He laughed a little and snagged a rag--a clean one--from the box of tools and spare parts, cleaning his hands off with it and pulling his Jedi cloak off a rack he'd laid it over, swinging it over his shoulders. Never mind the smears of grease he had all over his face. "Just Luke. And really, it's no trouble at all."

Looking over, the Jedi studied this young woman who had to be the one that Steve had talked about last time. "You must be the girl that Steve's talked about," he said, trusting what his intuition was telling him.

Miku's face turned pink, a color that Luke should be familiar with, knowing Steve so well. "He... talked about me?" To Miku's credit, she didn't immediately bolt the scene, though in her mind she wailed and threw her hands over her face.

"Ah... nothing bad, I hope."

"Not at all." Luke grinned. "He seems very fond of you, Miku."

Luke led the way back out of the hangar, going at a slower pace. "Hmm. If I were Steve, where would I be?" he mused aloud, considering their options. "He's not in the hangar... I could try and feel him out in the Force. He's got a strong personality and I know him well, I'd be able to pick up on it."

"Oh..." Miku laughed, rubbing the depression behind her ear sheepishly, and murmured, "I know it." Even if the kiss had been an awkward one, it was still a kiss, and who went around kissing people they weren't fond of?

"In the Force?" Now, to be fair, Miku hadn't gone to see Star Wars when it was first released in Japan, she'd been all of seven, and the idea of it hadn't crossed her as interesting. So, she'd sort of missed all the contextual clues.

IT'S OKAY <3 restoresbalance February 13 2010, 01:35:44 UTC
"The Force is what gives a Jedi their power," Luke said, using the familiar lesson as a sort of mantra to quiet and focus his mind. "It's an energy field created by all living things that surrounds us, and flows through us, and binds us all together. People without the Force tend to be less distinct in it, but those with strong personalities or those close to a Jedi can be sensed." He canted his head. "Where have you looked for him already?"

"Ah!" Miku nodded, "I see." Well, not really, but she at least understood that Luke had a sixth sense, like she did. Even if he gave it a name. "Well... I looked for him in the sensoriums, and some of the hallways, and... and here. Oh! And I walked through the observation deck, but I didn't see him."

She bit her lip, "I thought to put up a message, but I didn't think he'd listen."

"He might have, but this way is just as direct. Give me a sec." Luke closed his eyes, concentrating on the presence that he knew Steve to have in the Force. It wasn't like the bright fountains of light that the other Jedi were, or the dimmer tickle of the Bene Gesserit; it was little more than a pinpoint of light, a distant star. Nevertheless, Luke latched onto it and fixed it in his mind like a beacon.

"Got it," he said, grinning. "He's this way, follow me."

"Eh? Okay," Miku nodded and followed after Luke, and thumbed idly at her choker. Well, it was good that she could at least hide behind Luke and possibly get the jump on Steve.

Tracking down boys was hard work, she decided. "So... you just... know where he is?"

"Yeah. Each person has their own presence in the Force, and a Jedi that's trained, or even one that's not, can pick up on particular ones they're familiar with and locate them. Other times, we can pick up on emotions a person is feeling and track them that way."

Luke did just that--mental practice--and picked up on a well of confusion and self-doubt. He was surprised, but he kept it to himself. Whatever the cause--something else, or feelings for the girl walking beside him, they'd find out soon enough. Luke wished Steve was Jedi so he could send the other soothing feelings, ones of confidence and faith, but Steve could sort through this on his own too.

"He seems to be moving around a little," Luke said. "But don't worry, we'll track him down."
