Jamie is a bit bored, so he wanders over to the Sensoriums, with vague thoughts of maybe going for a walk by the loch. But the pod he picks happens to be occupied - and from a quick look, with something much appealing than what he had in mind. He wanders up to get a closer look at what Temperance is doing, and makes a small face as he sees the skeleton.

"Och. He looks like he's seen better days." The skeleton, while vaguely interesting, is not /nearly/ as fascinating as some of the items around the lab. There's a few things he recognizes - microscopes, safety glasses and such. But some of the more high-tech equipment isn't familiar, and therefore, catches his attention.

He reaches toward an item he doesn't recognize with a curious expression. "Hey, what's this?"

Her gaze lifted long enough to send Jaime a look that spoke volumes of what she thought about his profound statement concerning the skeleton - which wasn she wasn't very amused.

She didn't say anything though, just hunched over a little bit more and carefully continued gluing the shards together.

"Hmmm?" she murmured before looking up. "Oh, that's Angela's 3-dimensional graphics simulation system," she explained as though that should be enough for him to know what it was.

He is oblivious to the unamused look - that's nothing new for him, after all. Instead, he makes his way around the simulator, looking for any obvious buttons or things that would turn it on.

When the woman replies explaining the item, he ahhs softly, pretending for all the world like he knows what she's means. "Oh, aye. That."

He pokes experimentally at the plate in the middle of the simulator. "Who's Angela?"

She almost told him not to poke at it because he might break it, but then she remembered it wasn't real. Sighing, she set the bone pieces back on the table and rose to her feet.

Moving over to the simulator, she smiled softly. "She's a Forensic Artist and my friend." She looked over at him. "She's quite talented. She's able to take a skull and give us an idea of what it might have looked like alive."

"A fore...what?" Jamie looks a bit baffled by the term - but fortunately, there's an explanation that follows upon that fairly quickly. "Oh, aye. I see." And he does - it's almost like a switch clicks on in his head.

"So, ye take this thing," he says, pointing at the simulator. "And then, your friend can use it to give ye an idea of what someone would have looked like while alive."

To him, it's like a small version of the Sensoriums. Still, he's not clear on one thing. "But why would ye want to do that?"

"A forensic Artist," Tempe repeated, though obviously didn't have to explain what that was.

"Yes, that's correct," she said with a firm nod of her head. "We input the data - such as age, race, sex and then the scanned image of the skull and it's able to give us a rather accurate image of what the person would have looked like alive."

It's also able to help determine different scenarios on how the person might have died, but she didn't add that part.

She looked at him with a rather baffled expression. "Why wouldn't we? It's part of what my job is. Helping to identify bodies that are otherwise unrecognizable and giving them a face, their identities back." It all seems rather logical to her.

"I...suppose," Jamie says slowly. "It's like trying to put a puzzle back together." He can understand that, more or less. His brow furrows as he considers further.

"Ye have these pieces, and they're all jumbled together. But ye sort them out, and make something larger out of them." That makes sense to him, and he nods a little in satisfaction.

"And if ye can find who they are, ye can tell their families, aye?" And the families will know what happened, have some sort of closure. Which is better, in some ways, then not knowing what has happened to them.

"That's not a bad job to have."

Temperance actually smiles at him, which is a first since she'd only just met him. But she is rather impressed that he seems to understand to a degree what and why she does what she does. Not many people do, and even a few of the ones who do - think she's weird and creepy.

"No it's not. I always find my job quite satisfactory." Which is her way of saying she likes her job, but being Tempe she just can't say it the easy way.

Jamie is actually pretty good at taking unfamiliar concepts and translating them into something he can deal with. And maybe it /is/ a little bit weird, but Jamie's seen plenty of weird in his travels with the Doctor. If Temperance wants to play with dead bodies, that's her choice.

He remarks dryly, "I hope ye would find it satisfying, if ye choose to do it for a living." Looking at the simulator again, he's tempted to ask if Angela is on the ship. But if she's brought up a simulation of something from home, there's a distinct possibility that either her friend is still asleep, or lost entirely. And Tempe's been fairly nice, considering he's barged in and been poking around, so he doesn't want to upset her.

Instead, he says, "I wonder what the Doctor would make of this." He means the technology, really, but he's not particularly clear on that point.

"Well, yes that would make sense now wouldn't it?" Tempe didn't understand why some people didn't get that she did what she did because she liked it. She liked it and she got to help people - both dead and alive. It really could be a satisfying job.

Her eyebrows furrowed. "What Doctor? One of the medical ones?"

There's a shake of Jamie's head. "No, it's just the Doctor, aye? He's a friend of mine and....och, it's a long story."

And not one he's willing to tell just yet. Especially since he doesn't know this person. That part, however, he's willing to remedy, so he offers out his hand instead.

"I'm Jamie McCrimmon."

And really, his explaination is more than enough for the moment.

She offers him a slight smile and reaches out and shakes his hand. "I'm Doctor Temperance Brennan. It's nice to meet you."

Jamie shakes the hand with a small smile of his own. "It's nice to meet ye, as well." The name, though, is a bit unusual - although there's something about it that he's trying to place his finger on.

He gives her a thoughtful look, then realizes what the name reminded him of. "You're not a Purtian, are ye?" The question's blurted out before he can stop himself, and he cringes a little, inwardly. "Och, sorry."
