Burning the Midnight Oil [open]

After everything that had happened in the past couple of days, anyone else would be asleep. Peter, however, was acquainting himself with the medbay more, thinking like a paramedic. If there were an emergency, he wanted to be prepared and on-hand to help ( Read more... )

Flipping through a medical file, Jean walked into the medbay looking rested for the most part. She had actually gotten more than five hours of sleep and that was good. After the battle she'd needed as much sleep as she could get to rest her mind. Thankfully, she'd gotten it and her pesky headache wasn't as bad.

Pausing, she glanced up suddenly catching a presence she hadn't noticed before. Her gaze shifted around slowly until it feel on the man who was busy checking over the patients.

She didn't recognize him, but she knew there had been a pod pop during the battle for the bridge. "Hello?" she called out softly to him as she made her way over to where he was working.

Peter looked up to see the redhead. He was slightly taken aback. His thoughts were as open to her as everyone else's. Though they were a bit more surprising compared to other males on the ship.

Stunning. That was it, and then immediately back to medicine and compulsory introduction, which he proceeded to do. He approached her and offered his hand.

"Peter Petrelli. Licensed nurse and EMT." His hands were gloved, and a quick image of the instance with Static burst through his head.

"And you are...?"

Jean is not going to complain about Peter's lack of a dirty mind! It is very much refreshing, and Jean smiles at him. The mental image of his run in with Static's powers cause her smile to widen a little more.

"Ah, it's nice to meet you Mr. Petrelli. I'm Doctor Jean Grey," she reaches out and carefully shakes his hand. "I'm in charge of the medbay and as such I must say it's always nice to get more medical staff."

It was then that Peter realized who he was talking to.

"Oh, good to meet you, Dr. Grey. I had actually meant to talk to you about that." Peter stopped, images of his older brother's mockery from when he had graduated from nursing school flashing unbidden through his mind.

"Nathan hasn't said anything about me, has he?" Because that would be both embarrassing and evervating.

Jean's eyebrows raise in question and really, if she hadn't just seen the images flashing through Peter's head, she'd have never thought Nathan capable of such mockery.

"No, he hasn't," Jean smiled at him reassuringly. "Nathan and I haven't really gotten the chance to talk about much outside of things dealing with the crew."

She glances down at the patient Peter had been checking. "How long have you been a nurse?"

"Uh..." He said, that sense of dedication reinforcing itself over the unbidden memories. "I spent two years as a hospice nurse... Then... Took some time off." Caitlin. Adam. Arthur. "Decided to be an EMT after I had some things settled. I've been doing emergency medicine for about the past year..."

"Well I'm sure your experiance will come in handy on this ship. Crew members have a way of constantly getting hurt around this place." She sighed and shrugged her shoulders.

She glanced around, mentally checking on the patients and then turned her attention back to Peter. "Was Nathan glad to see you?" she asked suddenly, hoping he didn't mind the personal question.

Peter smiled.

"Yeah, he and I are... tight, in our own way. He just likes to rag on me a lot sometimes." He looked troubled for a moment, but now seemed to be forcing a guard. Still, flickers of images of Nathan in his darker moments could be glimpsed to any telepath not actively blocking. "We don't always get along, and fight, but that's what siblings do. End of the day, situation like this, I see Nathan? He's my brother, and I love him. And vice versa." Pure truth until that last bit, when a slightly older sounding Nathan voice practically screamed, trying to escape his mind.

It's not what I would have done...

Jean's look became one of concern and she sighed. "Maybe things will be easier for the two of you here..." she suggested her voice soft. The sound of Nathan's voice from Peter's memory was really bothering her and she drew in a deep breath.

"Are you and Nathan from the same time?"

"No, I already got that one on my own. I'm... Pretty used to time travel." He said with a sad look. "I'm from a little over a year after he was... is taken the word? Anyway, yeah, I have to adjust that some things haven't happened yet. For him, anyway." He quickly turned to give a look at Paco's bed, making sure he was still okay, obviously distracting himself.

"So, uh, what about you, Dr. Grey? Any family on ship?" Yes, he's trying to change the subject. Is it obvious?

"Maybe things will turn out differently for the two of you here," Jean suggests with a shrug of her shoulders. "Being on this ship can cause you to look at things differently."

She glances away, frowning. "No, no family or friends from my world. But apparently there's a version of me in a few of the other crew member's worlds. So several others recognize me. Go figure."

Peter gave a nervous smile. Now that he knew who she was, he knew it was only the same block that had initially kept him from recognizing Wally and his focus on work that had necessitated introductions.

"Yeah... I hope that's not going to be a problem for me..." He thought of Wally's face as he told him he was a comic book, then thought of Hiro.

"This may sound really crazy, but you're... kind of a celebrity where I come from. My friend Hiro? Biggest fan ever. Back when I could use Telepathy and Telekinesis he was non-stop with the comparisons... But the fact is, if you were that important in that many worlds, other people you knew will be too." He smiled reassuringly. "If one of the worst guys I know is walking around here, then your family and friends are probably just waiting to wake up."

Peter Petrelli: His real superpower is stupid optimism and idealism.

Jean's cheek begin to turn a bright red and she's suddenly busying herself with the medical chart she's holding. She's really not use to that sort of thing being said about her. In her world Mutants were still being seen as a problem, and to know that in some other world she was considered a hero? Very strange.

"Really?" she murmured, glancing up at him. "That's... a little weird to be hearing. But thank you, I think?" she said, but offered him a smile to let him know that she wasn't offended or anything, just a little embarrassed.

"Maybe you're right, but I don't think I'm going to be overly hopeful... I don't want to get my hopes up about something that might not happen."

"That's up to you, I guess." Peter said as he got up to check a patient or two, speaking without looking at her. "I'll keep up the hope for you, then." He looked at a patient's vitals.

"So, a lot of people get hurt? Is the movie-style Zombie apocalypse that common?"
