Grounding and Centering

Katara had her time to laugh and her time to cry after finding out about her world. She'd had fun with her Outsider friends, she'd broke down in front of a person she would rather have not done that with and she was still adjusting to recent events. Throughout all that had happened, there was still the silver lining: Toph was here, and now there ( Read more... )

The last time he was here, Zuko really hadn't had a chance to enjoy the environment. He had been too busy trying to pummel Katara into unconsciousness and steal her best friend.

So he steps in, feeling a little self-conscious as he recognizes the environment. But he needs a place to meditate, too, so he sits down across from Katara wordlessly and begins breathing, his eyes closed.

Katara didn't open her eyes, but she really didn't have to to know if was Zuko. You didn't run away from a guy, and then wind up being friends with him later, without recognizing his presence. At least, martial artists didn't. She was sure it was the same way with him.

And she was happy to have him here too. The last time they were here Zuko was a different person, but now he was calmly sitting here with her, meditating. A slow smile came to her face, and instinctively, her hand found his.

"Hard day for you too huh?"

He doesn't take her hand, but he doesn't pull it away.

"Ask me that when I don't still feel like I have a country."

KATARA, HE IS IN A MOOOOOOOOD.

Katara sighed. She should have known that this would hit Zuko pretty hard. As it was, she was still adjusting, and was in fact the reason that she was here in the first place.

"For all we know, we might be able to get it back. Nothing's final yet. Besides, we still have to find Aang, right?"

Zuko snorts angrily. "Find him for what, if he doesn't have a world to save?"

This is the part where you punch him, Katara.

Katara's meditation mood immediately ceased, and she got up angrily, and a moment later a pretty hard wave knocked Zuko on his butt.

"What do you mean NOT A WORLD TO SAVE!? Is THAT why you went to look for him? To SAVE the world?! How about because he's a good person, and he would save you in a second!? He did it a few times! Is THAT why you joined us, just because you wanted him to help you save the world?! What about that time when you were the Blue Spirit? How about you try and help him, now that he's been here for a few YEARS and he need you!"

Katara turned away from him. "If this is how you're going to react, thinking about yourself, just get OUT of here! I need to meditate! My world is gone like yours TOO, you selfish jerk!"

That came out so wrong.

. . . if there was ever a right way for it to come out, now that Zuko thinks about it.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't - I didn't mean it like that. I didn't mean it at all."

He stands up, wringing water out of his shirt. "Of course we'll still save him." He sighs, angry at himself, angry at fate, just plain angry at everything.

Katara calmed down, and brought her hand out taking the rest of the water from his shirt. "I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have done that. I'm just...sensitive when it comes to him."

And without thinking, she gave Zuko a hug. "Zuko...you're a good friend when you come to us, trust me. I know you must be as twisted about this as I am. But we can't lose hope. There's still a lot on this ship, with these people to say."

He sighs again. "You're right. I'm just . . ."

Enraged. Lost.

She hugs him, and he tenses, slightly awkward at so recently an enemy's touch. He relaxes enough to pat her on the back. "I'm sorry. I just want to go home, and if I can't . . . I still want to save Aang. But after that . . . I don't know what I'll do with myself."

Ever.

Katara looked at him sternly. "Are you stupid? What about Mai? You have her too. Don't forget that. No matter what you have to deal with, you don't have to deal with it alone. She'll do whatever she can to help you."

He'd better not forget it either. Katara felt alone sometimes.

"We need to hold on to each other Zuko. We're all we have. But we have a purpose, and we WILL get back to our homes."

"I know. I'm not alone."

He sighs.

"I just can't stop thinking about what we're going to do if we CAN'T get our homes back."

If he's just Zuko forever, and never a prince again.

"Good, I was hoping you weren;t that dumb. Sokka I can understand, but not you. Besides, you sometimes have a tendency to get all mopey and brood. Not that its completely inappropriate now, given the situation."

Katara thought a minute. "If our homes are gone, we just make a new one. You guys are my family, and when you're with me, I'm happy. I'm not saying it will be easy, but I AM saying we have to cope. Otherwise, we might just go crazy."

He's quiet for a while. "Nobody's going to go crazy," he mumbles, just for something to say.

He sighs and looks up. "Katara. Do you remember when Stacy was talking to the command team about Project Descent? That's Aang they were talking about. So we need to find out more about that."

Remembering NEVER to bring up the final confrontation between her and Azula, Katara nodded. "No, we aren't. And that's why we all have to stick together."

At this, Katara's expression looked hard, almost angry. "Yeah, we will. And I'm going to find out why his mind was erased, and make sure that he gets back EVERYTHING that was taken from him. I don't care if he's important to taking down the Ohm, they had no right to do what they did to him."

He looks a little surprised about the last part. "His mind was - what, did you find out something new about him?"

"I've been putting bits and pieces together," Katara said. "I've...had dreams, with Roxie's help, where I've been able to speak to him. I know that there were things done to him, and I know he had to forget certain things. I also know that Aang is protecting us even now, from some kind of evil on this ship."
