Making Waves (open)

Tobias thought he might have hit on something that might lift his sprits for a bit. He, unlike some ship-lings, doesn't have time to be bored, because he's too busy being depressed, conflicted and confused with the situation with his parents. Sometimes all the thinking gives him a headache. And a hawk can't exactly take an aspirin for it ( Read more... )

It was a perfect time for Will to pay the Sensorium a visit. The sound of water lured her like a dinner bell.

She had to wonder where the dolphin had come from, though - if it was a simulation, or one of the actual crew members. If it was a crew member, maybe she could go swimming with it. If not - perhaps it would be best to simply watch, and appreciate the dolphin's palpable joy.

Tobias noticed he had another onlooker. < Um, hi. > he said.

The dolphin was talking! That was unusual!

Then again, dolphins were supposed to be really smart, and although Will could talk to machines, animals were sympathetic to her feelings, but she hadn't really tried THAT hard to talk to them before. She hadn't needed to. She understood them anyway.

Figuring now would be as good a time as any to give it a try, Will concentrated on the dolphin.

The last part was whispered before her thought-speak trailed off, as though she'd been trying too hard to project and had gotten some of her private thoughts mixed in with the actual speech.

< Thought speech? > he asked. < Who are you? > Unless she was in morph, she wasn't an Andalite. Tobias was curious.

It wasn't just thought-speech. Her emotions - mostly curiosity, with a little bit of shyness - flowed off her with her thoughts.

She kept cutting the feed off after a little bit too much time, as though she wasn't really used to talking this way.

< Tobias. Er...normally, I have feathers instead of fins. I can change my shape...thought this one might cheer me up a bit because it's naturally happy all the time. >

< Oh, I see! A shapeshifter. Um, I guess the telepathy helps since you don't have a mouth to talk with as a dolphin. And dolphins always seem so happy all the time, so I guess that WOULD be a good way to make yourself feel better. > she smiles.

< Yeah, of sorts. And, even when I'm not, er, shifted, my mouth doesn't lend itself well to talking. Or, beak, actually. I hope it didn't startle you. My talking this way. >

< It's okay. I don't usually do it a lot, but I can. I don't mind. >

Her thought-speak is still interspersed with little, softer background words, semi-indistinguishable but clearly her own.

< I'm curious about how you're able to. Where I come from, it's mostly only Andalites who can do it...it's a natural thing with the species. But there is a way non-Andalites can...I just don't feel safe going into too much detail. It's connected with the shape shifting ability. > he said. He was smart enough to be careful, more so since the whole Yeerk thing.

< It's . . . I'm just kind of . . . can read peoples' minds, but I try not to. > Will shrugged. < Hearing somebody else's voice in my head kind of caught me off-guard - >

< Yeah it can be rather frightening at first. > Tobias agreed. < I've seen that a lot. >
