Christian Films #2 :)

Here is the first post I did. I can't believe it was already 2 years ago!
Films About Jesus (2011-04-20)

Because my personal testimony involves a Christian film, they have a place deep in my heart.

I recently watched a film on Paul and Acts. The name on my Dad's DVD says "The Bible - Paul of Tarsus". When I did a search online for it, search results came back saying the movie name is "The Bible Collection: Paul the Apostle" [2004] or "Saint Paul" [2000].

The Bible - Paul of Tarsus

Director: Roger Young
Music: Carlo Siliotto
Starring:
Johannes Brandrup (Paul of Tarsus), Franco Nero (Gamaliel), Thomas Lockyer (Reuben), G.W. Bailey (Barnabas), Barbara Bobulova (Dinah), Ennio Fantastichini (Peter)
Duration: Approximately 190 minutes

Watch the full movie here.
I don't know why, but I think the music on my DVD sounds better to me for some reason.

Recently with The Bible series airing on The History Channel on TV, I've been trying to watch something to assist me in reading God's word more. It certainly helped with this film! As a child, I never really am fond of the Book of Acts. I hated history and I didn't get most of what Acts was saying. I was only interested in the more famous Bible stories like the story of Stephen and how Paul came to be a follower of Jesus, or even the receiving of the Holy Spirit. However, I really am beginning to notice I am missing a huge part of the Christian faith which is being told in Acts. So I tried to get my act together and try to read Acts in detail. After a long time of waiting, the English Ministry is offering a Sunday School class on Acts. So I joined it and even if I have a hard time waking up early on Sunday, I try again and again.

Anyways, back to the movie. I think this movie has a cool main theme background music track. They added some dramatic elements and inserted two extra characters to tell the story of Paul. However, it is a good visualization of the story of Acts. This is the only one that I have seen so far. I'll see after I watch the Bible Series.

I really like how the script writers added different passages written by Paul from the Pauline epistles into Paul's script. They drop several representative passages as the movie shows Paul traveling to the different areas, visiting different people on his mission trips. See these cool examples!

(1)
1 Cor 15:54-57
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

(Movie appearance: when Paul preaches to the people in Jerusalem. This is after he escapes from Damascus after being lowered in a basket, after his name change to Paul, after receiving Simon Peter's blessing and permission to preach Jesus to the people, rendition of Acts 9:19-31)

(2)
1 Cor 4:10-12
We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it
Rom 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(Movie appearance: after Paul and Barnabas recover after being hit by stones and rolled off a cliff, rendition of Acts 14:8-20)

(3)
1 Cor 13:4-7
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

(Movie appearance: when sharing with Aquila and Priscilla when they asked about the love that Jesus taught, rendition of Acts 18)

(4)
Acts 20:22-24
“And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
1 Cor 13:1-2
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

(Movie appearance: after speaking to Aquila and Priscilla, when Paul speaks to the people and when he is aboard a ship to go back to Jerusalem before going to Rome. Rendition of Acts 20:13-38)

(5)
Gal 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

(Movie appearance: Paul while talking to James, about rumors of Paul teaching against Moses' law. Rendition of Acts 21:17-26)

(6)
1 Cor 13:11-13
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

(Movie appearance: after Paul is taken to Caesarea, writing letters in a prison cell, rendition of Acts 23)

(7)
Acts 28:25-26
They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said through Isaiah the prophet:
“‘Go to this people and say,
“You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”

(Movie appearance: near the ending when Paul approaches Rome, rendition of Acts 27-28)

Cool huh? :) I encourage all who want to know more about Acts to open your Bible and turn to the Book of Acts while watching this movie. I really like how the movie emphasize on Paul's love and perseverance to follow what Jesus has told him, to go all the way to Rome and the ends of the earth to tell about this Good News and his testimony to everyone. This is very encouraging to everyone who has an interest in missions.

Acts 23:11
“Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”
(Movie appearance: God encourages Paul in the prison cell)
