Uniting Families Act

On Tuesday, May 8th, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) introduced the Uniting Families Act in the US House, and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) did the same for the Senate. Should the bills pass, the Immigration and Nationality Act would be ammended to add "permanent partner" next to spouse, effectively making it so that bi-national same-sex partners go through the same immigration procedures that currently exist for immediate relatives of US citizens.

This bill would recognize same-sex relationships at a completely unprecedented level. Since civil unions, domestic partnerships and marriage are only offered at state and more localized levels (aka not federal), this is a right that not even those in states like Massachusets, Vermont, New Jersey, etc. currently enjoy.

And let's face it, I have personal reasons that I'd want this to pass.

23 Students Arrested at the UC Berkeley Poverty Center!

From http://www.unionvoice.org/

Students and workers at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz are sitting in to demand a living wage for campus custodians. Please show your support and call the Regent now. In an October 12, 2006 letter to UC President Dynes, President pro Tempore of the State Senate Don Perata and Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Nunez wrote: "Over the past year, employees represented by... AFSCME Local 3299 have been asking the UC to solve the long standing problem of pay equity at several campuses. Unfortunately little has been done to address this important issue... Upon our meeting with the leadership of AFSCME Local 3299 we agreed to seek additional funds to address pay equity for custodians... It is our hope that you will immediately respond to this issue and instruct the appropriate campuses that they should move forward and resolve this festering issue...." The UC administration has continually ignored the demand for a living wage. Workers and students are currently sitting in to protest the Universities' lack of commitment to workers rights.
