Rene Portland resigns, lesbian athletes rejoice
Here is a column by author and educator Pat Griffin ("Strong Women, Deep Closets: Lesbians and Homophobia in Sport") about the resignation of Rene Portland, coach of Penn State's women's basketball team. Portland's rumored (and basically confirmed) "no lesbians" policy on the team made her an undesirable in many arenas, spurring protests at both home and away games, particularly within the Big Ten conference.
Now that's news!
