The U.N., US and Israel

I just want to point out a couple of things to all those that keep bringing up UN Resolution 1559 (the one that was voted for in 2004 and called for the disarmament of Hezbollah). The US is among a minority of countries represented in the UN that has veto power. That means that any resolution put up to vote that does not comply with US interests is immediately shut down. This was the case with the most recent US veto of a UN Security Council resolution charging Israel with "disproportionate use of force" in Lebanon and demanding that it withdraw its troops from Gaza. In fact, 8 of the last 9 vetoes of UN resolutions have been cast by the US - and 7 of those dealt with Israel’s war on Palestine.

Furthermore, while Israel continues to claim that this war is about applying UN resolution 1559, this same state ignored for decades 2 MAJOR resolutions concerning it directly: 194 (1948 - calling for the allowance of return of Palestinian refugees and compensation of property for those not returning), and 242 (1967 - calling Israel to withdraw from occupied territories of several neighboring states). It also waited 22 years (!) to abide by UN resolution 425 (1978 - calling for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon, which was finally done in 2000). There is a total of about 65 or 66 UN resolutions that Israel did not (and in most cases still has not) complied with. In fact, no other state has reached that high a number in its non-compliance record.

Furthermore, Article 13, Section 2, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, states "Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country."

And in fact, Israel itself through this war has gone against the same resolution they claim to be implementing, considering these are the two PRIMARY pieces of the resolution:
1. Reaffirms its call for the strict respect of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence of Lebanon under the sole and exclusive authority of the Government of Lebanon throughout Lebanon;
2. Calls upon all remaining foreign forces to withdraw from Lebanon;

Hypocritical much?
