Meaningless Ramblings

He sat alone in the crisp, cool darkness on the unfeeling and forgotten old bench. He listened intently to the quiet and deserted street, only the faint drone of the nearby highway intruding on his thoughts.

"I've come so far but have I really gone anywhere?" He asked the bland gray sky. He didn't get an answer. He lit a cigarette, the flash of the lighter assaulting the dark air around him.

"I have almost everything I want and am on the right track to get everything else. I have every reason to be happy. So why aren't I?" The breeze offered no reply.

He closed his eyes as he took a long, slow drag from his cigarette. As he released the smoke from the confines of his lungs he noticed a change in the atmosphere.

"Pretty," he murmured as he opened his eyes and watched the dark, morose grays of the sky faintly changing to pale oranges and yellows. Nearby a lone bird began to chirp, daytime's lives starting to wake up, his spirits lifting somewhat.

He could feel his mood rising as though being pulled upward by the rising sun. "It's a new day. I will be happy today. Why shouldn't I be?" The bird chirped in response.

He crushed out his cigarette and stood up to take a deep cleansing breath. He was so lost in his determination to be happy that he didn't hear the distant creak of the old floor boards or the rusty squeak of the worn out porch door.

He felt himself being wrapped in familiar and warm arms and the hairs on his neck tingled at the soft kiss she placed there. "This is why I'm happy," he smiled for the first time that day.
