Am I racist?

I'm going to start this rant off with a story.

So a week ago, I was at ASU after turning in a final. Some of the class and our teacher were all meeting over at a place to go drinking. I had been talking to Jordan and she was on her way to come with us (though I found out later it was too late for her to be there cuz <21). Anyways, whilst I was ( Read more... )

I live in a city that is unusual in terms of demographics, as compared to a majority of the US. The city I live in is almost equally black and white (actually, the black population is a slightly higher than the white population). The middle school I went to was predominantly black. So, I've gone to school with and had friends from the black communities (ranging from just your everyday communities to the "ghetto" communities) pretty much my entire life.

I've had a couple of (specifically, three) incidents involving three black men (just one individual, each time) being rude and harassing me in the way those men harassed Jordan. Outside of that, I've not had any problems with black men. I (and most women I know who have been sexually harassed, molested, or even raped) have had MANY problems, over the years, with white men in their early to mid 20s (especially, white men in the military). These men are much worse, in my experience, than any of those three black boys/men I encountered.

My point here is that you can't blame an entire group (or race, or a specific portion of a race) of people for shit like this. I admit that, when I'm out at a bar or two, I tend to avoid anyone in this city who is obviously enlisted. But I do try my best to not say or thing that everyone in the military is like the many scumbags I've had the displeasure of being harassed by.
