Without knowing anything about this movie, I've made a few observations. First of all, this director's first movie, Voices from a Distant Star, was one of the most saddening movies I've ever seen. I take that into account when preparing myself for this movie, knowing it could be his style to make his movies with that mood, or that it could've been that way with just his first one.

The next piece of information that tells me about the movie: the title. The Place Promised to us in our Early Days. Just this title tells me this will involve nostalgia of some sort, which is more likely than not to be depressing. I imagine this "promise" will be broken or fufilled in some way that is not satisfactory or expected. In short, the title's mood seems to be aligned with the mood of the previous movie's title.

Next, I direct your attention to the image. The first things that jump out to the viewer are the characters, who are holding violins/violas/chellos. This is obviously a romance of some sort, and the presence of instruments (an emotional red flag) indicates that the romance will not be happy-go-lucky. Looking elsewhere in the image, one sees a sunset on the right (the girl's side) insinuating demise, and a snowstorm on the left (the boy's side) insinuating coldness or depressing conditions of some sort.

I could go further, but I'm already altogether completely convinced this will be just as, if not more depressing than Voices from a Distant Star.
