Just In From The Opeth Concert And..

Opeth was fucking awesome.

Nevermore and Into Eternity were solid too ;]

But it's all about the Opeth. They didn't vary from the setlist i was expecting, which was:

The Baying of the Hounds
When
Bleak
In My Time of Need
The Grand Conjuration
Face of Melinda
Deliverance
Blackwater Park
-----
Demon of the Fall

Opeth really proved why they are considered one of the best and most unique bands in metal. You might think a band who's songs generally span in excess of 10 minutes each would not work that well in a live environment, but quite to the contrary. Their brand of lush, complex and well performed music is almost surreal when heard live. Mikael's voice is just as good live as on studio albums (a la Damnation). He also has his fun with the crowd. By now you all know i enjoy bands who interject some wit and humor into their show, and on this count, Opeth did not fail. Among other amusing segments, he did these two death metal "lessons". One in death metal vocals, where he got the crowd to execute various death metal mainstay grunts (the last of which, he had only the girls do, and then told them all to meet him in his dressing room heh), and another where he had the drummer perform various cliche death metal beats after he gave brief explanations - much to the amusement of all.

Lastly, Mikael told us that they would be back in february or march of 2006. Given the packed house at Webster hall and the level of energy coming off the crowd, i didn't doubt they would return. I just didn't figure it would be so soon. I can't wait.
