Math education

We are working on a way to teach math "ideas" to very young children and A and other children with possible delays.
The goals is to develop math concepts in verbal, hands on, visual ways while avoiding the abstraction of the mechanics. If small children can learn the ideas then as they get older the mechanics will make more sense. It also provides great enrichment to children who otherwise "risk" learning a head of their class by teaching them something that they would not learn in school.

I will post  thoughts here as a way to keep track of our thoughts.

We did Vi-hart  hexaflexagon with the kids. L got frustrated but I think they might be a good way to show shapes and start a discussion. It also provides ways to teach colors and be repetitive.  We used adding machine tape as our long strip of paper which works pretty well.  Note they can be cycled instead of folder which provides other ways to look at them.

Also remembering the "coody catcher" as a kid. Are there other folded shapes that could be used squares/ triangles/ pentagons etc?
