Ok, I poked at this.
Pedometers still do not work, as per my mom.
GPS units will work, they sell bike ones and walking ones, the difference is how they calc calories burned. I think the bike one is larger than the watch type. But both could be thrown in a pocket. They will tell you how many feet you walked in a day (no need to know stride length).
They do cost $100-$150 and the big draw back is that if you carry one around all day you need to shut it off for drives.
The most popular seems to be the Garmin (in the low cost range)
J has the bike version as a gift from his dad. Might try carrying it around for a day some time.
