In canon timeline, he's taken from chapter 157, right after the lvl4 invasion at the Order, but before the Komuvitan D ark.
Basically, his story is the same as it is in canon. He became the Bookman's apprentice at the age of 6 and traveled around the world with him, developing an incredible memory and sharpening his five senses. The things he saw at that young age have left their mark on him, even stronger than in the original manga.
"Lavi" is his current, and 49th alias, and at this point he doesn't even remember his real name, and won't talk about it to anyone.
He joined the Order at the age of 16 and met all the wonderful people such as Linali Li and Allen "Ghost" Walker, who were supposed to be only meaningless pieces of history to him, the Bookman's successor. It worked for a while, as long ad Lavi remembered the fact the old man never ceased telling him - "Bookman has no need for a heart". But eventually, Lavi started thinking of those people as his comrades, his friends, and really cared for them. Deep down, he wants to give up his position as the next Bookman, but he can't - the Clan would never let him, as he has knowledge no ordinary person should ever have. Even if he tried backing out now, in the end he would just end up being killed, or something even worse.
Lavi is disappointed in humans: as a young boy, all he could see around himself as he traveled with the Bookman was war, war and more war. When one ended, another started. He used to think he was somehow better than the rest of the people, as he knew things others coul only imagine of getting hold of, and would be recording history after his dear mentor. Now that he's a part of one of those endless wars and has doubts of becoming a Bookman he's been so hardly training for, he doesn't know anymore. Is he any better than the other humans, after all? Or is he even worse? What does this war really mean to him, or the others, as even the dead can't be at peace but are bothered by it? He once saw the demon's souls through Allen's eye, and will never forget the horrible sight or the odd sensation he had then, as he realized many things about the war, about the demons, and about Allen.
Even though he doubts everyone and everything in the world, he hides it well, behind a fake smile - or at least he thinks it's fake. When he smiles at his friends, he doesn't know if it's fake or not, does he trust these people, or does he not, or should he even. Sometimes his expression may seem genuine, sometimes it's as fake as can be. He might seem a bit colder than your average Lavi, sometimes more, sometimes less, but colder he is, and more distant.
The church doesn't consider Exorcists people at all, and Lavi is no exception. He's just a weapon, like the rest of them, which only adds to his doubts - if he's not "human" at all, how could he be "better" than them?
