Today is my dad's birthday. My brother and sister-in-law beat me hands down in gifting. I gave a New Mexico guidebook. They gave Braves farm-team tickets and some barbecue gift certificates. And according to my dad, my mother has been buying him things all during their travels this year, claiming "this is for your birthday," but then gave him some new shoes today anyway.

I am probably more like my dad than my mom personality-wise, although we're all pretty shy. My dad and I have similar senses of humor, which I like, and we both worry too much, which I wish I could shed. We both think that if we anticipate any kind of trouble and mull about it, we can head it off. We are wrong.

My dad likes watching "The Simpsons," eating Mexican food, going to farm-equipment shows and making sure doors are locked. He hates "crazies" (a broad term, encompassing everyone from terrorists to bad drivers), "sticky" (noun - a substance than gunks up remote controls, usually deposited upon them by his children) and fast-food drive-throughs.

He is 74. And I'm glad he's still around. I just wanted to go on record with that.
