Tax Time

I've been dreading getting my taxes done this year, believing that I'd end up owing at least $1K to the government, since I had withdrawn my 401K last year. Early withdrawals are subject to a 20% penalty, but I had little choice as I was unemployed for nearly four months after I moved from NJ to IL.

So today I go to get my taxes done, and it turns out that I may actually be owed around $1K! I would have been thrilled if my liability was 0, but to end up getting money back was one hell of a shocker! However, the tax prepared was unable to file the return yet since I did not have all of the needed information for the stocks that I bought/sold last year. It's not likely to affect the return amount too much, but it potentially could lop off a few hundred bucks, depending on any capital gains I earned as a result of stock sales. We shall see.

The guy who prepared my taxes moved to Moline about five years ago, from Brooklyn! So, suffice it to say, we had plenty to talk about; he being from NYC and me being from the Newark area. We had similar observations about living in Moline; the slower pace, the much less stressful commutes, and the lack of blinker use by drivers around here. We also agreed that you just can't find good Italian food out here like you can in NY/NJ. Out there, you can find a pizzeria or ristorante on every third block. On the other hand, Mexican food here is really good. Anyway, I thought that was kinda cool.

After that I went to the mall. I picked up The Future of Freedom by Fareed Zakaira; it finally came out in paperback. After that I got my hair cut and on the way out of the mall I got a beer (Blue Moon) and a burger. Now, I'm kinda bored and craving a road trip. Maybe tomorrow.
