He was supposed to be there. He had promised he would be there. But she knows, even before she sets foot on the beach, he has broken his promise.

A small spasm of sadness ripples through her heart as the she forces one foot to move in front of the other, her eyes locked onto a small island lost amid the raging waves of the ocean. She stops just short of the where tide meets the sand, lost in thought. Right and wrong have long ago ceased to hold meaning for her. Tragedy is just a state of being.

Shaking her head to clear the fog, she sighs, her legs finally giving way as her body collapses onto a damp shelf of driftwood.

He promised.

Two words, a thousand different meanings. But promises, like rules, are meant to be crossed and broken.

A dull ache that starts in her throat snakes its way down to her thrashing heart, winding its way around her spine, she feels sure her ribs will shatter and crumble around her splintered heart.

He promised.

Her vision blurs on the sand, a distorted shape causing her breathing to catch in her throat. Her knees hit the ground first as she shimmies closer to the watery illusion, batting at her eyes with the sleeve of her jacket. Vision clear, emotions threatens to overwhelm her once more.

A small, perfect heart is drawn into the sand and there, in the middle, is written but one word. Bella.

Her throat constricts at the implication and the tears return as a new set of emotions wash over her. He was here. The words rattle around in her numb mind, filling her with a strange tingling sensation of pure unimpeachable elation before sadness creeps back in. But where has he gone?

No sooner had the words crossed the threshold of her mind than a pair of strong arms slid around her waist and pull her close.

Her lips turn heavenward in a small watery smile as she allows herself to melt backwards into the smooth marble arms. Her skin is ablaze as his hand finds hers, fingers lacing together without thought, and she wonders why he doesn’t melt beneath her fiery touch. She catches his scent as the winds shift, a sweet mixture of saltwater and divinity, and she thinks it’s just so Jasper. They’re more than just a line in the sand.

A soft kiss brushes against her temple and her heart skitters along a bumpy path, true poetry in motion.

I’m sorry I’m late.

His fingers ghost over her skin in tiny heart shaped caresses, tracing shivering patterns across her arm as his fingers draw in time with the echoing drumbeat of her heart.

The tide inches forward, tugging at the corners of the heart in the sand and before long there’s nothing left but damp earth and a streak of dying light across the horizon.

He holds her tighter, his lips brushing against her temple once more, and she knows he’ll say no more tonight. He’s already said all he needs to say.
