in the summer it gets so hot that you can’t sleep.
you’re on top of the sheets,
and you stare into the lightness of the night.
replaying thoughts in your head.
you feel so restless.
and nothing can keep you occupied.
the rustle of downtown might keep you calm for a while,
but you know not for long.
sticky arms clinging to the leather sofa.
the worn-out fan,
sucking on ice cubes won’t cool your head.
you see neighbors bringing out bicycles,
kids running through the sprinklers screaming in play,
and lopping up sweet, neon popsicles.
it’s too hot to sleep.
let alone sit still,
and pretend to be productive
and grown up.
and can’t help but wish you had savored your younger years.
