Author's notes: I'm sorry there was no moogle...I just didn't know where to put it. And another sorry for the lack of definite RikuRoxas. If it sounds more like RikuSora, then I'm extremely sorry too; I meant it as gen, nothing more than best friends point of view.
"Why am I going with you?" the boy beside him keeps asking himself, his voice tiny and full of a notion Riku can't quite place. His eyes are emotionless - as all nobodies are - but there's something there, something real, something yearning to know the truth behind his willingness to go, even though before this, he fought so hard not to. He's quiet and mellow and just tired of arguing, but through the silent passages they've slowly traveled, the small one has persisted, on a slightly regular basis, to ask said question since they'd started walking. And though Riku knows the answer; though he knows the real reason why he follows so willingly behind him; he doesn't want to say it aloud.
...Because you want to know where you came from.
--
Riku'd known from the very beginning that he wasn't strong enough to beat Roxas. After all his training and practicing and worrying, he'd seen it coming before hand, and had thus come prepared for the worst. Even though he was only half of the boy he'd come to know as a child - only a portion of the puzzle that made up his best friend - just the fact that the nobody he was fighting was Sora's nobody had made it hard for him to even attack the enemy before him. Every punch he'd thrown had been half-hearted and unwilling, and he knew that giving himself back to the darkness - back to Ansem - was the only way he could possibly complete the task DiZ had assigned to him.
He'd do anything to make Sora whole again.
That...that was the only reason he'd even agreed to the mission in the first place. He never really cared about DiZ' plan to get revenge on the Organization, because he always found it to be so trivial - but once he knew the man could help bring Sora back - his Sora - he was more than willing to do anything the foreign man had asked him to.
Just looking at Sora as he drifted within eternal sleep was enough to bring him to his knees then-- make him fall down and cry in front of the white pod. But more than that, more than whatever feelings he might have about his mistakes, it was a way to try and return the favor and friendship the younger boy had shown him since was young. And if it required him to return to the darkness...
...well then so be it.
But after...after he'd fought Roxas - given into the darkness and changed reverted to this blasphemous and haunting new form of life - asking only that DiZ to go ahead and return while he walked with this nobody to Twilight Town, something had changed. As he watched the boy - his eyes are exactly the same as Sora's he thinks to himself; blue and deep and honest - he notices how relaxed Roxas' now conscious self feels about going along with him. He isn't upset or angry, as Riku had originally thought he would be-- only calm and willing to follow along with the boy - man - who had captured and defeated him.
He doesn't radiate fear either, as Riku's second train of thought had figured, and this fact only baffles him more. why in the world would he come along then, if not because he's frightened? he wonders, and why wouldn't he just go right out and state it? But only as he ponders this, looking down for only a moment and meeting the smaller boy square in the eye, does he come upon the real reason why.
He...trusts me?
--
Riku doesn't really understand how Roxas can be so forgiving about this. After all he's done - after all he's going to do, in order to get his real friend, Sora, back - he can't see how Roxas can think better of him than a piece of trash, ready and willing to be thrown away. It confuses him more than it scares him, the notion of trust, even though the boy could easily put up a good fight and delay the plans even more.
But maybe, for now, as Roxas walks beside him, asking himself a single question over and over again, maybe it's not so bad. Roxas - Roxas is a part of Sora, and though his emotions may not be real, and they may not count for anything, maybe being trusted by half of Sora is enough.
For now, it'll have to be.
