Andy was a wood carver of incredible talent who carved the stunning Acanthus leaf mural in the lodge. It was carved out of maple. He carved many other objects including a display of utensils and a plate at Trollhaugen Lodge.
He would seek me out at the breakfasts. I would show him my projects, including my Acanthus leaf carving and say encouraging words.. He seem to always have a small smile afterward. It was like he could see the tradition being past on. I will miss him.
During World War 2 He was a member of the Norwegian resistance against the Nazis. He was a member of the "Shetland Bus". That was the merchant marine ships that sailed between the Shetland Island of Scotland and Norway, bringing supplies, ammunition, and resistance fighters. His ship was sunk by the Germans. After spending 5 days in lifeboat, he was rescued and returned to duty.
