I went to the funeral for Sheldon Katz today. The May chapel was packed this morning, as dozens of people gathered to celebrate his life and tell their stories. It was one of the most beautiful and touching memorials I've ever been to. He was a happy man; he lived simply, loved completely, and cherished every person and every moment that came into his life. I'll always think of and remember Sheldon with a great big smile as he greeted the congregation as an usher on Friday nights or high holy days, or as he cut grapes at the Friday night onegs. He always, without fail, sang along with the cantor at services, even when he wasn't supposed to be singing or didn't know any of the words. I'll always remember his spunk and vivacity, and the joy he brought to so many lives. Apparently the night before he died he went dancing at a weekly senior citizens shindig, and all the ladies fought over who was the next to dance with him. He was something, that's for sure.
Thank you for years of memories, Sheldon, and for bringing a smile to my face whenever I was with you. Thanks for cheering me on and being a proud supporter, whether it was at a Shira concert or on the bimah on a Friday night. Thanks for being the best example of living life to the fullest. You will always be loved and missed.
