new york new york!

So we left savannah in the dead of night, and with it seemed to go our problems.  The drive was easy for me, since I was asleep most of the time.

Stephen has been so loving and attentive since we started our vacation.  Its easy to be with him. I asked him what the change was and he said he just could focus on enjoying spending time with me instead of worrying about other things. that makes sense to me, i guess. We also had the chance to have another serious relationship conversation without him getting all defensivey and stuff. which is good.

my parents have been driving me crazy as usual, but what else is new?

On saturday we met up with macbeemer  and went to Carmines! YUM YUM.  Then we went shopping for a while and I bought a new wool trench coat. It is rather gorgeous, I must say- its charcoal with wings, wide lapels, a tiny cinched waist and a very wide skirt that hits me at about my knee. I feel very winter fashionable in it. Then we went home, grabbed some chicken soup and headed back out to meet Bret who had kindly purchased us all tickets for Shrek the Musical!

Ok quickly heres what I have to say about Shrek: First off the cast is phenomenal. you couldnt ask for better people.  Brian Darcy James plays Shrek, the one and only Sutton Foster plays Fiona, Donkey was fabulous as well- he went above and beyond the original character and that is no small feat in his big fuzzy donkey costume complete with restrictive hoofs. and Chris Sieber, possibly my favorite person in the world steals the show as Faarquad. David Lindsay Abaire adapted the screenplay (and didnt have a hard job at that- the dialogue pretty much follows the movie) and also writes lyrics that range from witty to heartfelt and sweet- apropriate for this kid friendly sweet modern fairytale.  It is beautifully overproduced by the designer of Spamalot and Janean Tesori wrote some fabulous music as well. Not her usual fare but still very good.  A couple of songs stood out in particular.  Overall I was very impressed by the adaptation, it is a good blend of all the things you expect from the movie, original material, good and of course fancy schmancy production and great performances.  Oh yeah did i mention john tartaglia as pinocchio? I'm surprised he took such a small part but hes hysterical. Shrek was good stuff.

On sunday we got up extremely late- around 1 o clock and we went with my dad for lunch in china town. mmmm dimsum.  we took off afterward to go wander around downtown and did some window shopping.  I forgot my purse so I did not do any damage, although i really wanted to. when we got home I decided i wanted to see a movie so I looked up what was going on at the Angelika and we decided on the new Woody Allen- Vicky Christina Barcelona.  There was an 8 pm and a 10:20.  we rushed onto the subway at 7:30 and made it to houston at 8:03, then deciding to wander around, find a cafe, and wait for the 10:20. Soho is dead sundays after 8 pm.  at least its not like Savannah where everything closes at 5 or 6 but we pretty much wandered around looking for stores we couldnt quite remember the locations of, doing a couple of circles around prince and spring streets.  We found the kidrobot store which I am very excited about! if you've never experienced kidrobot.com you must. immediately.  Theyre these customizable designer toys. toys for grownups. you can buy them white and paint them, or you can buy one of the designer ones that have been decorated by artists. And of course there's tons of other merch- t shirts, bags, doohikeys of all kinds.  was very exited for that. then we found a place on spring street called Rice to Riches. ricetoriches.com. these people are all about rice pudding. thats all they serve. weird right? sooooo YUMMY.  We were attracted by their bright lights and weird entrance.  The inside looks like a futuristic ice cream parlor only they have rice pudding instead. I had the hazlenut chocolate. I SO reccomend it.  they are serious about their rice pudding. Well not so serious, the shop is adorned with silly signs that say things like "eat as much as you want youre already fat"

Finally it was time to head over to the Angelika and catch the late flick.  Vicky Christina Barcelona is about a couple of beautiful 20 somethings (christina is played by woody allen's favorite- Scarlett Johanneson) who go to Barcelona for a summer and meet this strange man who propositions them to go with him for the weekend to see a sculpture and, well, sleep with him.  Christina is totally into it but Vicky is engaged to be married to this kinda boring guy.  She ends up being the one to sleep with him and it screws up her whole perspective on life and why is she getting married to this guy she only kind of loves. Christina subsequently moves in with the scruffy spaniard, who is a painter, and has a hot affair with him.  His ex wife shows up, played by penelope cruz, and they all have this weird threesome affair.  Woody Allen you are a dirty old man. Christina gets bored of the two of them and moves out, realizing she still hasnt found what shes looking for in love.  Vicky gets married to her Beau, but confronts the spaniard again, still unsure about whether or not she made the right decision. But when the ex wife shows up with a gun, she realizes both of them are crazy emotional artists and she was nuts to think that was what she wanted instead of her stable husband.  At the end of the film, both girls are right back where they started and the characters havent grown or progressed at all.  WTF WOODY? It was a bit depressing and very cynical on the subject of love.

no idea whats in store for today, but I believe it includes seeing Rock of Ages at New World withjigglykat and macbeemer  !
