Question: And Then There Was a Bloody Hook . . .

Oct 30, 2011 23:29

In honor of the holiday, I present you some of my favorite spooky…creepy…gory…mysterious (recent and not so recent books).

As a kid, I LOVED Christopher Pike. I mean, come’on. Slumber Party and Chain Letter? Totally freaked my 10-year-old brain out.

I read Dollhouse Murders around the time I had a doll that I was (and am) convinced was possessed. *shivers* Dollhouse murders is the book that solidified my goal to become a writer.

Then I graduated to Stephen King. Pet Semetary  This book confirms that digging up the dead is a BAD idea. Very bad. And The Shining . . . all I can say is, “Red Rum, anyone?”

When I started living on my own, I realized that I could no longer read scary books and watch scary movies. Every creak and groan my apartment made signaled a ghost, a hockey-mask wearing psychopath, or knife-wielding cross dresser. So, I stopped reading scary books and stories. But I came back to them. I mean, you’re talking about a girl who bravely did Bloody Mary, owned a possessed doll, and loved her Outja board. Yet, I still lived a lone. My spooky had to be a bit different. Enter Coraline by Gaiman. (Buttons have never looked the same since I read this book.) and The Near Witch by V. Schwab Remember those ghost stories you used to tell at slumber parties? Remember how you loved and feared them in equal parts? Welcome to The Near Witch .

Naturally, this month I read a few creepy books: Mr. Monster by D. Wells, Monstrumologist by R.Yancey and Sweetly by J. Pearce. The covers alone make hair rise on the back of your neck.  A couple of the books will be added to my list of Favorite Creepy and Spooky Reads.  Now, it’s your turn . . .

What are some of your favorite spooky, creepy, or suspenseful reads?

question, books
