I finally got a chance to watch the series finale of Smallville on Saturday and I I have to say I loved it. I enjoyed every character in the episode (with the exception of Lionel) which is not something I have been able to say in a while. I decided to write down my thoughts about each character featured in the episode as well as a possible fanfic idea.
Chloe & Oliver: I will admit that I'm not really a fan of Chloe or Oliver individually or together, but I did really enjoy them in this episode. I was somewhat apprehensive when we heard that Chloe would be the one to convince Lois to go through with the wedding, but I was glad that it wasn't done in a way that made Chloe seem like a know-it-all. I also loved that it was ultimately Clark's vows that convinced Lois. The same goes for the scene with Clark & Oliver. Regarding Oliver, I like that they still managed to give him something heroic to do without it taking away from Clark and that we saw him encouraging Clark. I think it was creative to end Chlollie open ended in a way where those that are fans of the relationship as well as those that wanted them to go the Dinah/Oliver route could still be happy.
Lex: I'm also not a huge fan, but I did like that he wanted Clark to save the world so they could he could basically fight with Clark. I know the mind-wipe is a touchy subject for some, but I do think it could be an interesting plot. How would Lois & Clark interact with him post-mind-wipe, would Lex attempt to regain his memory, how would he react to paper trail of information (his marriages, etc.), and a host of other scenarios.
Martha & Jonathan: I really loved their roles, though I would've liked a bit more Martha. I wasn't sure how the Jonathan ghost stuff would work, but I liked that Clark was the only one that could see him.
Jimmy: I saw Aaron Ashmore's name in the credits so I already knew it was coming, but I really enjoyed the fact that they brought him back as a way to make up for what happened with Doomsday. I was upset about it at the time & I eventually got over it, but I know it was a sore subject for many. I'm glad that they could make up for that in the end. Part of me does want to pretend that the original Jimmy didn't actually die in season 8, but decided to come back a few years later.
Perry: I'm glad they were able to get Michael McKean to do voice work. I remember a lot of people being disappointed when we found out him appearing was unlikely. I am glad that we were able to get a sense of how he would be as the Daily Planet Boss Perry as opposed to the Perry we saw in his previous episodes.
Tess: I loved every scene that she was in even though I spent the whole time worried about her. I knew she was going to die, but I was still hoping that she wouldn't. I just find her story so tragic. She spent the first 5 years of her life with a man that eventually dropped her off at an orphanage and was eventually taken in by an abusive couple. Obviously that took a toll on her and was part of the reason for a lot of the actions she made during her time on the show. It had to hurt to know that her father basically felt she was only good enough to bring Lex back to life. I did like that we got to see her kick ass once last time and I have to admit that scene kind of reminded me of the Lois fight scene in Facade (I love that both ladies can hold their own even when they are basically undressed & incapacitated).
This brings me to her final scene with Lex. As I said before I knew once she went into that room, she wasn't making it out alive, but I am glad that she still managed to go out a hero with the mindwipe. I also loved that when Lex said he was making sure she never turned in to him, her reply was that "Clark already did that". I love that a big reason for her arc this last season was to show the effect that Clark can have on people. I think its actually kind of nice that he was still able to to "save" one Luthor even though he couldn't save Lex in the long run. I know a lot of people have problems with Tess because she has been kind of inconsistent over the years, but for me I enjoyed seeing her slowly redeem herself and I'm glad that she basically remained that way even in the end.
The one thing I do wish though was that she had a scene with Clark (& even Lois) at some point or I would have even loved a reaction of them about her death. I get with all that's going on that there was no time, but it was something I wished could have happened. I did think it was a nice touch to include that scene of her at Watchtower where she had a dress bag that was presumably for the wedding. I liked that she was clearly going to be there, but never ended up making it.
Clark & Lois: I've saved the best for last. Clark was great throughout. I loved that he basically told Lois the only way the wedding was going to be canceled was if she stood him up. I also really loved that scene with Oliver where he managed to unmark him by telling him he believed in him. Much like with Tess, you can see that Clark's presence tends to make those around want to be better. I love that Clark is always attempts to help those around without using violence and is willing to give them several chances. This was not only reaffirmed with Oliver, but with Lex as well when he tells Lex that he has a second chance to do the right thing. This is despite all the stuff that he knows Lex has done.
I of course loved the scene where we realize that every save he's made were basically trials to prove himself. It won't of course make up for the crap Jor-El has done over the years, but it does make things a little better. I loved that once he saved the plane that he flew up to the window to smile at Lois. It was nice to see him share that moment with her. I've heard some were upset that we didn't actually Tom in the suit, but it actually doesn't bother me that much. I'd like to assume they know Tom in the suit would pawn Henry Cavill in the suit.
Lois was also awesome. I was somewhat worried that we wouldn't get to see much of Lois the reporter, but I am very happy that we did. Some highlights were during the scene with the the bitchy co-worker. I remember wishing Lois would hit her and I was happy when she ended up doing. I really loved that she was able to convince them to wait for Clark to come and save the world & her attempting to contain her smile after she saw Clark was great as well. I was hoping that we'd get to see her naming Clark, but I guess that's what fanfic is for.
The Clois was really great throughout the episode. I have to say it made me laugh that Lois was adamant about not going through with the wedding, yet she was still wearing her engagement ring. I loved that we got to hear Lois & Clark's vows and even though the wedding didn't go all the way through, in my mind they are still married. The wedding was great (my only quibble other than them not being able to finish was that I wished Tess,Emil, & Lois' family or at least more guests that we actually knew could have been there).
The whole 7 years thing in the future actually gave me some ideas for the fanfic I'm thinking about writing and I think it could be a lot of fun to play on.I am actually thinking about doing something based on the finale that deals with that as well as a universe where Tess ends up staying alive because its something I have really been thinking about over the last few days. I haven't written in fanfiction in years, but I do think it could be fun. I have a lot of different scenarios in my mind so there could be a few different stories, but I think there will be at least one for sure.
