Benazir Bhutto

Dec 27, 2007 16:36

Today the world lost a great woman and democratic leader.  Benazir Bhutto was assasinated in her vehicle as she was leaving a rally this morning in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.  She was shot twice, once in the shoulder and once through the neck, injuring her spinal cord.  The shots were quickly followed by an explosion as a suicide bomber attacked the caravan.  She and 22 of her followers were rushed to the hosptial only two miles away.  She died from her wounds.

Shortly after an earlier attack in October after she ended her self imposed exile, she sent a private email to a close US friend telling him that, if she were to die, she would blame Musharaaf.  She blamed him for not providing adequate security befitting a former Pakistani Prime Minister.

Musharaaf is blaming extremist terrorists and has declared a state of mourning for Pakistan over the next three days.  The attacks have been condemned by the US, England, India and the UN as "cowardly" and the work of extremists.

She will be buried in her home town as early as tomorrow morning.
