Chapter 1.
Royal Diner Wednesday December 13, 2006 2:00 pm.
Booth followed Brennan into the Royal Diner after promising to pat Zach on the shoulder with an open hand "What the hell is that about he thought to himself."
He took the counter stool next to Brennan and began to perfunctorily peruse the worn out menu. Zach was chatting incessantly to Cam, Angela, and Hodgins about his dissertation, but Brennan was staring with a faraway look in her eyes. Angela put her hand on Brennan's forearm to ask her a question and she flinched as she was brought out of her reverie.
"Brennan...sweetie, are you ok?" Angela questioned.
"I'm fine." Brennan answered quickly.
Booth heard the automatic reply from Brennan and sighed to himself. He knew she wasn't fine. What, with her family leaving her behind again, how could she be 'fine.' He watched as she hopped off her stool and excused herself to the restroom. He watched until she disappeared through the dark oak doors of the women's restroom having to peer slightly around the corner to accomplish the task.
Angela moved over to sit on Brennan’s stool in her absence. Booth stared down at his bowl of chili the waitress sat before him and let out a deep sigh. Angela turned toward Booth and stared at him pensively.
"You're staring." announced Booth.
"I'm trying to read your mind." Angela stated.
"Is it working?" Booth's gaze drifted back to the bathroom doors that Brennan had disappeared behind.
"She's not fine is she?" Angela's voice quivered with the question.
"No. She's not fine." Booth let his spoon drop back into his chili frustrated.
Cam had been silently listening to Hodgins and Zack go on incessantly about his new position with the Jeffersonian. When she noticed the break in Booth's conversation with Angela, she excused herself and made her way over to the counter.
Angela noticed Cam approaching and stopped talking midsentence. "Bored with Dumb and Dumber?"
"You can only listen about dissertations for so long before your ears start to bleed...literally." Cam laughed as she went to stand in front of Booth effectively blocking his view of the restroom doors that kept Brennan hidden away.
"Let me go check on the boys then, before they resume their debate on Astronauts v/s Cavemen." Angela rolled her eyes and hopped off Brennan's stool. Cam waited until Angela was no longer within earshot then placed her arm across Booth's shoulder and leaned in close to whisper in his ear.
"Booth.....are we still on for tonight?" Cam whispered just as Booth avoided her.
Booth ducked from under her arm and looked past her towards the restroom doors as they swung open to reveal a flushed looking Brennan. His gaze locked with hers and he narrowed his eyes zeroing in on her red rimmed ones. He hopped off his stool and walked towards her. Brennan turned away from Booth as he approached. She tried to wipe under her eyes for any remaining evidence of tears. Booth put his arm around her shoulder and guided her into the pay phone hallway across from the restroom. He turned her to face him and grimaced as he saw the traces of redness surrounding her sea-blue irises. He grabbed her chin between his thumb and forefinger and made her look him in the eye. Her eyes began to fill with tears once again and she bit her bottom lip determined not to let them fall.
Booth opened his mouth to say something, but Brennan halted him placing her hand over his mouth.
"I'm fine Booth, just a momentary lapse, seeing my father again and Russ..." She had to clear her throat as she spoke her brother's name.
"Damnit I just got him back and now he's gone...again. Don't do this Brennan, compose yourself. Don't let Booth see you like this." She thought to herself. Determined to sound more in control, she continued.
"And Russ ...leaving with my father....I just got a bit nostalgic...I just need to get back to work, start on the remains of Kirby and close the file on this case, so I can go home and take a nice hot shower." She ducked from under his arm, stepping away from him and wondered at the loss she felt since separating their bodies.
The distance she physically put between them wasn't lost on Booth and he decided to file it away for another time. He decided not to pressure her anymore for right now and in turn changed the subject.
"OK, so how about I drop you back off at work, I'm done for the day, I could hang out....do all the paper work....order Thai for dinner?" Booth graced Brennan with his "charm smile" and waited expectantly for her reply.
"I....uhh...rode with Ange...and since when do you offer to do all the paperwork, it's always such a negotiation with you." Brennan smiled in spite of her mood.
She noticed Cam walking towards the restroom and looked at Booth with her eyebrows raised. He noticed the cautious look on her face and turned his head to see what caused it. As Cam approached, Booth instinctively moved in front of Brennan obstructing her view. Brennan could tell that Cam needed to discuss something with Booth, so she made her way from behind him and started back towards the front of the Diner. Booth grabbed her hand before she completely got beyond his reach. Brennan turned to look at him, then down at their joined hands. She glanced back up at his longing gaze expecting him to say something, some reason that he pulled her back when Cam clearly wanted to speak with him, but he never said anything, just held her gaze.
"Booth...." Brennan queried growing uncomfortable at his silence.
"Order some food, you need to eat something, you'll feel better." Booth simply stated and dropped her hand so she could walk away.
Booth turned his attention to Cam and found her studying him with a knowing expression on her face. She laughed a little to herself and then shook her head slightly.
"What are you laughing at?" He wondered aloud.
"You." She laughed a little more.
"Ok." Booth was growing annoyed that his conversation with Bones had been interrupted only to have Cam laugh at him. "Did you want to talk to me, or were you just going to laugh at me the rest of the afternoon?"
"I was actually trying to talk to you, before you avoided me and disappeared back here." Cam's words came out harsher than she'd intended.
"I wasn't avoiding you....intentionally....I needed....Bones had a really rough day....I was concerned...just checking on her, Camille." Booth stuttered.
"You don't have to explain Seeley. She...is a priority...for you. I may not understand, but....I don't want to...and it's none of my business." With that off her chest she continued. "So, do we still have plans for tonight?"
"Uhh, Sure...” Booth's mood plunged as he agreed.
"We haven't spent any time alone together in weeks, since..."
"Since Brennan and Hodgins were buried alive, I know Cam, and I'm sorry, it's just....I'm sorry." Booth's mind flashbacked to pulling Brennan out of the ground.
He closed his eyes briefly and shook his head to clear his thoughts. He looked out into the front of the diner in search of Brennan. She was sitting on the stool he'd abandoned finishing off his chili and smiling beautifully at something Zach was saying. He felt a pang of envy that he wasn't the cause of that smile, but pleased nonetheless to see it. He turned his attention back to Cam.
"You still owe me some of that peach cobbler that you're grandmother made." Booth thought aloud.
"Damn. I was hoping you'd forget about that, you know I hate to share." Cam pretended to be put off.
Booth laughed ignoring Cam's little dig. "So, what time do you want me to come by?"
"Straight after work is fine, if you don't have any other commitments tonight." Cam walked around Booth and headed back towards the front of the diner.
"I'll see you after work then." Booth said loud enough for Cam to hear as he followed.
Brennan was sitting with her back against the counter still laughing at one of Zach's anecdotes. Booth walked over to them and sat down on the stool she'd abandoned for his. He turned to face her and reached over to pull his nearly empty bowl of chili towards him. She watched as his hand slid across the counter towards her and his fingers closed around the edge of the bowl. She looked up into his face guiltily and pursed her lips.
"I was hungry too Bones. Why do we always have to share?" Booth teased, not really mad, just wanting to bring some color to her cheeks.
"What? I only ate half..." Brennan argued.
"You don't even like chili and you definitely ate more than half, you ate nearly the whole bowl." He continued unconsciously moving closer towards her and teasingly wagging his finger in her face.
"I did not Booth, you're exaggerating." Brennan simply stated.
The waitress behind the counter snickered at her favorite customers. She thought about letting the Doctor know that her FBI agent partner was right, but decided against it, thinking the show they put on was so much better.
Zach watched in awe as the unacknowledged sparks between the Jeffersonian’s favorite non-couple flew tangibly before him. He turned as Angela walked up behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"They're at it again." Zach whispered as Hodgins appeared at Angela's side.
"Break it up you two; it's time for us to get back to work. Our boss is headed back as we speak." Angela announced pulling her keys from her coat pocket.
Brennan hopped off the stool she occupied looking for her blazer she'd taken off. Booth stood and grabbed the blazer from the stool where he sat. He moved behind her and helped her put it on. As he pulled the sleeves up onto her shoulders. He moved her hair to the outside, his fingers lingering on the softness of it. Brennan's spine flinched as Booth's fingers found their way into her hair. She shivered as he arranged it outside of her blazer and suddenly turned to face him to break the contact. Her gaze fell upon his mouth and she watched as his tongue darted out to wet his bottom lip. She swallowed suddenly and her thoughts drifted back to when he arrived outside the diner earlier. She thought for the briefest of seconds that he wanted to kiss her. "Stop it with your daydreaming Brennan, it's pointless. You're partners, you can't go there." Brennan backed away from Booth and turned to walk out. Booth grabbed her hand before she could get beyond his reach for the second time that afternoon. She turned back around to face him and again he just held her gaze. She inhaled deeply and watched his eyes narrow as if trying to decipher something in the passing silence.
"I'll talk to you later..." He said the statement as a question.
"Sure...If you'd like." She could feel his hand release hers just enough to graze his thumb down the inside of her palm.
"Yeah, call me, OK." His brown eyes searched her features pensively.
"OK.” She realized he was still worrying about her and she gave him a small smile before turning to walk out after Angela.
Booth's eyes followed behind Brennan until she disappeared around the corner. "I have to talk to her, get her to open up to me..." He was still looking out the glass doors as if he could conjure her back to the diner.
"You do realize that you're staring, right?" Hodgins announced standing next to Booth, stuffing his receipt in his wallet.
"Staring at what?" Booth finally turned from the door to face Hodgins.
"Staring...after Brennan. Dude, she's been gone for like 5 minutes now." Hodgins smiled up at Booth.
"I was just.....I'm concerned....about her, you know.....she had a really rough day....she's my partner." Booth defended.
"Riiiiiight." Jack thought to himself.
"Jack, can you do me a favor?" Booth asked.
"Sure, what is it?"
"Do you have plans tonight?"
"I wasn't aware you were ready to take our relationship to the next level Booth?" Hodgins laughed.
"Ha Ha, funny. I'm serious man." Booth cut the joking short.
"Angela and I were going to go to Wong Fu's for dinner, but nothing set in stone." Hodgins explained.
"That's perfect." Booth thought aloud. "Like I said, Brennan had a really rough day today. She says she's fine, but I know she's not. I wanted to check on her, but I have....an appointment...later, so if you and Angela could drop by her house, you know, maybe take her some dinner..."
"Say no more, I know Angela's worried about her too, of course we'll stop by." Hodgin's assured Booth before grabbing his coat and walking out the Door.
