Deep Kiss of Winter by Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter
This book brings together two novellas by these authors in one dual book.
I really hate this concept, i can't even begin to tell you how much. First off, it slices a good book by an author i LOVE into half a book, and then i am forced to read something i have never heard of by another author who has probably written 12 books in a series and now i am being tossed a half-book in hopes i'll get hooked and backtrack and read 1-12 in HER series as well.
Kresley Cole is awesome and i ADORE her. Her novella, titled Untouchable brings together Danii the Icere/Valkyrie maiden and Murdoch Wroth. Daniela cannot be touched by anyone save another Icere or she experiences intense pain, and Murdoch is a Forbearer, one in an army of vampires who refuse to drink blood directly from the flesh in order to preserve their sanity and morality. They are, of course, fated mates.
Which brings an interesting turn to how they can satify some of their baser urges without touching skin to skin.
Danii has been told by Nix, soothsayer Valkyrie extrodinaire, that she can only be touched once she comes into her powers, but Danii has little hope of that happening anytime soon. She's already over two thousand years old, after all.
Murdoch is the kind of guy who used to love 'em and leave 'em, and has a hard time coming to terms with loving one woman the rest of his immensely long life, and that kind of screws with the relationship as well.
Even if it's shorter than i'd like, i still give it a big thumbs-up for creativity and awesome hotness.
The 2nd novella, by Gena Showalter is called Tempt Me Eternally and it was pretty good but like i said, i had the distinct feeling i was being tossed into a very established fictitious world and i had NO idea what was going on.
Basically, Aleaha Love is a girl on the run. She's a shapeshifter who can take on any human or non-human form and their abilities and she happened to take the persona of a girl named Macy who was hired by an organization called AIR (Alien Investigation and Removal) and finds hersef in the fight of her life when aliens arrive witht he supposed intention of decimating Earth's population with a deadly plague with no cure.
When the aliens land, however, they are not what they were told to expect and she is now faced with an alien male intent on enslaving her... sexually and beyond.
It's a pretty hot read, and i enjoyed it, but i really hated not knowing what the crap was happening. I guess it could be a stand-alone read, but i had Showalter pegged as someone i thought i would enjoy reading so i may have to look up some of her books when i finally get around to reading some of what is already on my massive shelves.
