2012 is the Year of the Enterprise

I've making a very scary resolution this year - Make a baby!

You're probably thinking that becoming a parent is a really serious obligation, and it's more than a little wise to go into that with some respectful trepidation -- I agree. Truthfully what's really scary to me is making that an official New Year's Resolution, however. Traditionally, I've shied away from adding big life events to my resolutions. It's a little superstition of mine, and I act on it somewhat unconsciously. My resolution to make this happen in our lives is therefore really kind of a big deal to me in the resolution itself aside from, ya know, the whole taking responsibility for a vulnerable, tiny human life part.

Therefore, if my partner and I are going to go into territory where we have never gone before, we will boldly go there! (Ordinarily, I'd suggest that "we will go there boldly," but Ian feels very strongly that "boldly going," and "going boldly" have entirely different connotations. I promised him that during the Year of the Enterprise, we would boldly split infinitives all over the place. It's a small sacrifice to make my loved one happy.)

There's always secondary subtext in these names -- always. One thing Ian and I really enjoy about Star Trek is that the crews always trust each other first and foremost. Hearing strange voices? Seeing things no one else can see? Acting like a crazy loon? No one ever tells their fellow crew members that they're crazy or full of it, they run a diagnostic on the ship to see what might be causing that. If Ian and I will venture into rightfully scary and unknown territory as parents, then it's right we should put our full trust in each other in all things.

Therefore, friends, I give you...

2012 is the Year of the Enterprise!

This year I resolve to do the following:

Make a baby!

Look for opportunities to help people.

Volunteer to serve in my community.

Walk at least 700 miles during the year.

Improve my health measured by better glucose and cholesterol numbers. (Specifics TBD after labs on Jan. 13 and consultation with physician on Feb. 17.)

Learn how to knit mittens.

Learn how to knit socks.

Learn how to knit the picot edge.

Explore 2 destinations in Colorado at least 2 hours from our home.

Make it so!
