You should check out the possibility that maybe there's a local farmer who does some butchering and you could pick up 1/4 cow for a good price and have good, cheap steaks. Mmmm.
This is so alien to me.tracerooApril 4 2009, 13:58:30 UTC
I'm not really sure where the cows live, to be honest. I don't see anything here that looks like a farm! It's just sort of suburbia, with all the neat houses lined up -- then a road that dead-ends into a cow field! Ian and I will have to drive around (geographic and architectural features prevent walking) and see if we can find the "front" of the cows' home and see.
There's a local grocery store chain called HEB which does not exist in Dallas. Everyone in Dallas raved about this place like the Second Coming was going to happen there in the produce aisle! So far, I'm really not terribly impressed with it, but that may be a reaction to the hype beforehand. However! In our pre-fridge days, I picked up a single rib eye for dinner one night since it was the only meat they package in a single. ZOMG! That was one of the most flavorful, delicious steaks I have had in awhile! HEB just put them on sale for $4.99/lb., which is a great price, so I'm going to go stock up.

We are splitting a quarter cow with Danny's uncle and our share is $160 for 1/8 a cow. You would have to have an extra freezer though, because 1/8 a cow is over 50 pounds of meat.
There is a real difference in the taste of steak, depending on what the cow was fed!
We have cows across the street, of course, but by no stretch of the imagination could you call where we live "suburbia!"
Thanks for the emailed blog links lately. I am enjoying them!

I went through a phase of trying local grass-fed steaks from our Whole Foods in Plano. I have to say that I wasn't overly impressed with them in terms of taste, tenderness, and so forth. I'll try local and grass-fed again -- just maybe I didn't like the grass in Plano! :)
Glad you're enjoying the blog links, thanks for following-up on them!
Yes, it will come as no surprise to you that I, too, am reminded of the same thing. It was the Great Earth Cow, I tell you! Huge enough to place each hoof on separate continents!
