At least one of you will pick up what I'm putting down in the subject line! I attempted to write, "What HAVE I been up to lately?" and I couldn't help but snicker at this odd minor old joke.
I got a lot accomplished this morning! Considering that I stayed up until the heretofore unknown time of 4:00 am and then woke around 9:30, this is pretty impressive in itself! This being the last day of my long weekend, however, it seemed like today was the day to get things done. I straightened the house, putting away things in 3 rooms. I ran some laundry. I ran the dishwasher. I started a written to do list of things on which I'd like Ian's help. I ripped a CD to MP3 and put it on my iPod. I got around to taking the photos of the pirate hats and also sharing them on
craftgrrl and
knitting which I've been looking forward to... Hmm. It seemed like I got more done than this list, but I suppose the real accomplishments are in the details. "I straightened the house," doesn't tell you the 20 minor laps through the apartment for every room, putting away one object at a time, and walking around in a circle.
Ian's been hard at work on our wedding website this weekend! I am hopeful we'll have that up in a few days. He designed a gorgeous insignia for our family which was a rich and unexpected treat in the process. Hopefully we can send out invitations to our party in Atlanta by the end of this month as I hoped. I think I'll just send an eVite after all -- it really is the most convenient.
We had a check-in talk about Ian's career on Saturday morning. His current practice at the Guildhall isn't going in the direction he hoped it would. In fact, it's rather taking him in the opposite direction from where he wants to be. We talked through some options and came up with two action steps for him this week to right his course. Ian wants to add some dramatic new pieces to his portfolio. He really doesn't want to go back and self-edit to improve upon what's already there. He hopes to get some professional advice about whether or not that would be beneficial, however. Really that's the biggest necessary next step: Get current portfolio review.
This weekend has been blissfully slothful. I watched the extended version of "Dances With Wolves" which I got for Christmas, and I sobbed at the end of it (as I usually do). I'm now quite certain that I'd never seen the full extended version before. I enjoyed it, but I think I'll keep both DVDs. The longer version has a more solemn tone to it that the shorter version does not, and they end up quite different in feel. I like them both. Despite my general loathing for Kevin Costner romances which make his movies twice as long as they should be, I have to admit that I am always touched by the depiction of the love between Dances With Wolves and Stands With A Fist (and shut UP, you haters!). When she leans her head on his chest and states simply, "My place is with you. I go where you go," I'm deeply moved. It reminds me a lot of the Year of the Western Star, and of course therefore touches me personally.
In less deep movie meanderings, I also pulled something down from Netflix with Michael Keaton and Brandon Fraser called "The Last Time." It was so-so, very strange, twisted ending that really didn't seem to jive with the rest of the movie -- like the writer quit, and when a coworker was walking by the script, he stopped to finish it off. Just sorta veers off the highway. Odd, and not one I necessarily recommend. You also might have guessed that I took in another Christmas gift, "From Dusk Till Dawn." I think that was it for movies watched so far, but the day is young!
I have, of course, also played an inordinate amount of City of Heroes. I'm trying to talk Ian into renewing his account for a month to play with me. No success so far.
Oh, and if you're wondering what life is like here in Texas (because I know you were!), it's 52 degrees and sunny here today. Like Atlanta, we get a passing pie slice of winter, but it's actually much warmer than Atlanta here in the wintertime (though I would not necessarily say the same for summer). It's rare that I wear my actual overcoat here, and yesterday I wore only a light jacket over a T-shirt. I am a Child of Summer, however, and I delight in this sort of climate.
School starts tomorrow. American Literature II: The Spawning. Pudd'nhead Wilson, Richard Cory and other poetry including yet more Robert Frost. Oddly we're watching the movie, "The Namesake" and writing a 5-paragraph essay about it (no big papers!), which I find odd. I've seen the movie. It's about Indian immigrants and the younger generations in America dealing with their culturally split personalities. Maybe that's why we're studying it? I'm not sure since it doesn't seem totally on the money for that sort of example, but we'll see. We're also reading Cold Sassy Tree which I've never heard of.
