At the opening of this new year, I feel great yearning to express myself creatively. The notion of the "creative spark" led me to consider fire metaphors for the new year, and eventually I arrived the notion of a bonfire. Certain metaphors about passion, adding fuel to the fire until it becomes a great conflagration are easy to see here. It occurs to me also that bonfires are usually built for social occasions. They're shared among a circle of people. The theme of sharing that emerged through my resolutions for the new year is one I did not expect, but I welcome it. In 2009, I wish to nurture the creative spark in my soul, feed these flames with passion and intent, and share the warmth and the light from it with those in my heart. There's no sense in building a bonfire for just one person; it's meant to be shared.
Besides, as Ian observed, we get to set stuff on fire, Fire, FIRE! The appeal can't be denied, really.
Therefore, in 2009 the Year of the Bonfire, I pledge to do the following:
1. Find ways to express creativity particularly through handcrafts; share handmade gifts.
2. Share one chapter of my writing on my website each month.
3. Be the communicator I can admire; share photos with friends at least once a month.
4. Let myself be quick to share praise and slow to offer criticism.
5. Try to negotiate everything; the worst they can do is say no.
Please allow me to extend to you an invitation to join me at the bonfire this year. I look forward to everything 2009 has in store for us all, and mostly how we will challenge ourselves, light a torch from this fire, and carry it through the year to improve ourselves and the worlds around us.
With love,
