I press stop.

Dear LiveJournal people who convinced me to stay:

I appreciate your gifts, your worship (of my feline perfection, of course) and your rationalisations (of LJ's behaviour), but if you'll take a moment and look at this support ticket (or this post, and thank you, shatterstripes) - you can even easily verify the issue as described right there - you'll see why I ( Read more... )

So could you/someone please dumb this down for me because I'm stupid and don't understand what's going on here because I don't understand computer/internet functionality really here.

So basically this only affects people who have something to gain from LiveJournal other than a personal blog?

It only affects people who won't put up with thieves.

LJ is changing referral links so they get the bonus instead of the proper referrer. They're changing where links go. Seriously, try the "crittersbythebay" link in the post - copy-paste the URL to see where it's suposed to go, then cleck the link from the LJ post and see where it sends you - and you'll see what's going on.

The OpenID functionality's been there from the start, and I can even choose what level of access to give to particular OpenID logins. Remind me when you get home and I'll show you; DW's got a much better access system than LJ.

As for getting a Dreamwidth feed, that's trickier. I'll look into it, but due to the server load and demand for RSS feeds of stuff, I know that some features are for paid accounts only. Okay, I was wrong. Apparently it's easy to get RSS feeds of any journal there; seems they decided it was too vital to not open up to everyone. Like... wow.

And... I hope the same. I've stood pat while LJ did a lot of really stupid and immoral crap 'cause it didn't affect me, and... I'm done being an apologist for them. DW's been almost painfully honest about how they do things (up to and including having a lot of trouble finding someone new to handle credit card payments because they don't want to screw over the users or change their principles to satisfy corporate interests. Seriously.)

I don't use that functionality in the slightest, everyone I know is here, and I really don't feel like tearing up 5+ year roots on an issue of principle that, again, doesn't really affect me. I'll happily subscribe to any Keet LJ feed, but I'm not likely to go anywhere.

Ah, okay. I'm... still not likely to leave, but that clarifies it a bit.

There've been an awful lot of issues of principle surrounding LJ of which this is only the most recent. It doesn't directly affect any of my links, and I'm not trying to make money off of anything... but I really can't see supporting theft in any way.

Why am I not surprised that since the site was bought by Russians that they'd do some shady shit to get money?

Pfft. Like it would have fared better in American hands?

It would have fared better in small, private hands. But a big evil company is a big evil company the world over.
