It's like that thing, but not.

As a note, I'm terribly disappointed that nobody has contacted me regarding the secret messages in the Anthrocon publications.

Mine read 'DRINK MORE OVALTINE'.

...which is a little disturbing, because I didn't even go to AnthroCon.

If you convert the UPC of the Ovaltine jar to base six then split into two-digit pairs, you can use those as page indices into the conbook, and the thirtieth word on each of those pages can be anagrammed into words for which the first letters spell out the name of my favourite fruit in Portuguese.

Obvious now, isn't it?

I do have them on hand here, so I'll gladly let you dig through on your own. *grin*

I found the one that points to the second one, but I can't figure that one out.

Apparently there was a message on the green sponsor medallions, too.

I hadn't heard about anything on those. Sheesh, I really did want to be at this particular AC....

Anyhow, it is slightly trickier, yes, but I've given a hint to another solver below.

I didn't get to Anthrocon. What were they?

Oh man, I noticed a secret message or two but then had so much fun I forgot all about them.

Then, uh... I caught con crud, and continued to forget about them.

Lessee now.

I'm mystified and stumped by the pattern of saucers and stars on the back of the pocket guide. Can you give any sort of hint?

Well, if I must, but it'll be a cryptic one for now-

The only things alien in the message are the symbols, but it should be very familiar at its base.

Sure enough, I was overthinking it at first. All I had to do was be a voyager.
