i me mine, i me mine, i me mine

i got all A's this term........well, there were some minuses thrown in, but still....i haven't gotten (got?) grades that good since spain

actually, spain was really a turning point for me academically (amongst other things)....i got mostly b's and c's in the two years before spain, but i got mostly a's and a few b's this year

i'm not quite sure why that is...i think i'm a lot more focused now since i changed my major to spanish, but i think part of it is also non-academic....don't ask me what that means, but i just feel more in tune with things now, more engaged

actually, i think i do know what that means....if being abroad for 3 months taught me nothing else, it taught me that you can't spend your life flying by the seat of your pants, letting the wind blow you wherever....it was fun in some cases, but there's a certain point where all the missed trains and broken promises stop being cute little quirks and you see them for what they really are....namely, the result of being too lazy to take charge of your own life

i will never forget the night i spent in rome wandering around termini station looking for a hostel to stay in because i hadn't planned ahead....you have to imagine me with a 20 pound backpack on my shoulders, literally pouring with sweat, wandering around and around the single worst part of rome at 2 a.m. in the sweltering heat of the italian night for literally hours, not a soul in sight, past hostel after hostel, ringing bells, walking up flights of stairs, getting rejected over and over again, and all the while my parents--my poor, suffering parents--sitting by the phone wondering if i've been mugged or worse

long story short, i eventually found a hostel that had one, sole, solitary room open and was able to get in (even though, through another personal oversight, i had run out of money on my debit card and so had to get an i.o.u. with my passport)....but that night was, without a doubt, the single worst night of my entire life, and what i did to my parents was unforgiveable....the fact that nothing actually did happen to me is really a miracle.....it didn't even cross my mind at the time, but that's how oblivious i was

of course, my european trip wasn't all doom and gloom--the alhambra in granada is the single coolest thing i've ever seen/done in my entire life--but the fun stuff didn't change me like all those horrific misadventures did (plus, i already wrote about the fun stuff in the photo albums)
