As the glow from the captain’s eyes brightens, you make your decision. The glow is causing strange tingles all over your skin, and the uncomfortable clenching in your stomach is your signal to get the hell off the boat.
Yes, it’s dark and the water still freaks you out a bit, but not nearly as much as a strange man with randomly glowing eyes does.
You begin making motions to move out of the relative safety of your side of the boat when the captain lunges in your direction. His hands tighten around your wrists, holding you fast even as you desperately struggle to escape. You pull and tug until you finally break free, pushing him away from you with a grunt. As you stumble backwards away from him, you lose your balance, but you achieve your goal as you tumble out of the boat and into the water with a large splash. You flail your arms every which way as you try to right yourself.
The captain yells something at you that you can’t make out over the sound of your own splashing. He’s craning over the side of the boat, you can tell because his eyes are illuminating the churning, black water around you. Worried that he’ll try to reel you back into the boat somehow, you take as deep of a breath as you can manage and throw yourself into swimming, hoping you are headed in the right direction. All you’re really sure of right now is you are definitely heading away from the boat.
You swim for what seems like forever. You pant heavily as you force tired arms to just go a little bit further even though they feel heavier than lead.
You’re not sure how much longer you can keep going, but luckily for you, the water starts to become shallower and shallower until your limbs make contact with wet earth.
You drag yourself as far up on shore as you can manage with the last of your strength, and it is there that you finally collapse, closing your eyes for just a moment. The day has been so hectic and full of dangers. You’ve had enough for the moment, and you just need to breathe uninterrupted for a little while.
Silence settles around you, broken only by your breathing as it evens out slowly. It’s so peaceful, in fact, that you drift off to sleep without meaning to.
You must have been more exhausted than you thought because the next thing you know, it’s morning again. You do a mental check of yourself before really opening your eyes. Your limbs still feel like they are made of stone, and you have some bruises from your struggle with the captain. Otherwise, you appear to be unharmed, and you breathe a sigh of relief. Even so, you still find moving your arms to push yourself up off the ground to be a bit of a challenge. Your arms are stiff and reluctant, and you’re not in a hurry to rush yourself.
Once you find yourself vertical again and you’ve fended off the wave of dizziness that threatened to overtake you, you allow yourself a moment to look at your surroundings.
You’ve found yourself in what appears to be a lovely little secluded glade. The trees rustle cheerfully in the light breeze. Birds whistle merrily as they dart to and fro in the branches, and from behind you, you hear the snort of a horse.
This brings you up short, and you ignore your stiff muscles as you turn around only to be faced with possibly the sot beautiful horse you’ve ever laid your eyes on. It’s pearlescent, gleaming as the sun trickles through the foliage and into the glade.
You are mesmerized by the sight and even more enchanted when you discern the horn proudly jutting from the beast’s forehead.
A unicorn.
It whinnies at you, shaking its gorgeous white mane, a gesture beckoning you to follow it.
This is one decision you don’t even need to think about.
You follow the unicorn.
