Hey Anon. What are some things you'd like to tell us about the place you work, but wouldn't normally post for fear of ending up adding to the unemployment rate?
I'm surprised that by now you haven't quite figured out who this is, but answering this ought to give it away.
The wonderful, concerned, education-oriented citizens of my state cut property taxes, which in turn cut school funding by a couple million dollars. Which meant that schools couldn't afford to hire the teachers that they needed. I went to the job fair for my district (which consists of nearly 200 schools) and there were 77 jobs open for 1700 people. 12 of them fell into my certification area. 9 of those positions were filled by transfers from the two elementary schools they closed. The other three went to people I knew and they were the only people I knew who got hired over the summer. One additional girl was hired out of field two weeks ago.
So here I am in private schools! And the district is set to close 3 more schools this upcoming school year, so I doubt I'll break into public for the 09-10 school year. I'll be looking at other private schools to work at. I wavered back and forth over the summer about applying privately vs subbing, but I make more in the private schools and we want the cash to fall into our life plans. Tada!
I'm surprised I don't know who you are either! i apparently don't pay attention very well.
Also, that really sucks. No offense to private schools, but I don't know if I'd be able to handle working in them. Then again, public schools aren't that great. Oh, dilemmas :)
It does have major plusses. I get to teach preschool, which exists in only 8 schools here without being special ed. There aren't any standards to conform to. I can do art for the sake of learning how to cut or other skills like that, which I wouldn't be able to do in public schools.
It's just the administration that bothers me. Well, that and the low pay, but it would be higher at a different school.
