it's a sort of family friend, so there isn't any contract, and i didn't get receipts either. so i'm fucked.

I am pretty sure the law will be on your side. He failed to provide a lease, there was no binding document that determined your stay. TAKE HIM TO SMALL COURT.

There must be check stubs, cash withdrawal records, something! Possibly, just the threat of being taken to court will make him refund you some money.
