Well, I have read a lot of Mag7 fic and some ideas get repeated over and over and become fanon, other ideas are so good they deserve to be reused, and then there is the strange stuff that resides in just my head. It is really hard sometimes to tell whether an idea has gotten life in my mind or whether it was birthed elsewhere and grown up in there.
Here we go with a bunny that is a huge mix of all of the above. If anyone sees something they recognize and think I ought to name a source, please feel free to let me know, as far as my mind goes right now all I can specifically think of is MOG, goddess of all ATF-fanon.
General: ATF fics usually have Ezra come over from the FBI, which works and is cool, but what if he was only just with the fibbies for a few years (as like a break from his real job) long enough to have all kinds of trouble there like normal fanon, but he was really from the CIA or another shadowy government agency (like central or something, here on out called the agency) before that (you know he could have been sent under to investigate the FBI in Atlanta?).
Back Story: Maude "raised" him (read dragged him around for cons or dropped him somewhere to learn stuff to help her run cons), he traveled a lot (russian military school, french fencing school, japanese monastery, think exotic and cool while learning awesome/terrifying skills), was a whiz kid (eidetic memory? genius? really flexible gymnast? perfect shot? multiple languages a must, he had to have some real skills to be "invited" to join the agency), graduated early (think years early with like double/triple majors), was involved in some heavy stuff (on vacation? Maude's fault? at a foreign school?) where his training from Maude and his smarts helped him not only survive but kick ass and take names - literally.
The agency gets involved in the case, which can only happen because Ezra was smart enough to get names, witnesses, and proof of whatever crime. Ez is like the perfect candidate for their new program, or their open spot, whatever, and they "recruit" him (does he go willingly to get away from Maude? was he blackmailed? bribed? kidnapped? pick one, it will color his future attitude towards the agency and other agents). So he works for the agency for years (he started young, real young) both overseas and on US soil (as an assassin? secret agent? spy? wet works? undercover? special forces? all of the above?).
Then he goes to the FBI in Atlanta (reason? spy? new job?) he's there for a few years as an undercover agent (the best there is, and he sees it as a vacation), then when he's fed up with his co-workers (rumors of being on the take? other rumors? harassment? attempted assaults?) and ready to quit (quit just the FBI? quit the agency assigned mission? can he quit the agency? has he already was that why he was with the FBI? did the agency ruin his job there with rumors to get him back?), along comes his knight in shiny black leather - Chris Larabee.
The Team: ok so normal ATF fanon, Chris is putting together a team under Travis, the rest of the guys are there and their usual back stories apply. BUT Chris has been going through undercover agents like crazy, they quit or he fires them, it's just not gelling and it's been months since the rest of the team has been put together (like 6-8 months as a team, this would affect Ez's acceptance as the new guy and all too just keep in mind).
So one day Chris finds a file on his desk (how did it get there? Vin? JD? do they know Ez or just heard of him?), it's Ezra's (duh) it is pretty thick and full of excellent work and tons of reprimands (it is Ezra we're talking about), the file looks complete and shows Ez has worked at the FBI for however many years, and has a little (read very very little, and is it even all true? any true?) about before the FBI, like Quantico and college and stuff. Chris is desperate and so off he goes to Atlanta to meet this Standish and get a read on him.
First Meet: Ezra just came off a long hard case, where his back up was either non-existent or really bad, and so he is planning on changing his situation somehow (quitting? beating someone up? disappearing? not suicide just doesn't fit this Ezra character) when he gets called in real early (like 8am) to work, he isn't told why or that Chris is there or anything. So he's not a happy camper when he shows up, and not running at top performance, and there is an altercation (with his "boss"? co-worker? loud cruel argument? fight? whatever it is) and Chris arrives towards the end of it.
It's something Chris thinks is real bad that causes him to want to pull Ezra out of the situation, and awakes his "protect my boys" mode. The "boss" people are unsure whether they need to be worried that Larabee saw whatever and might report it or be relaxed in that Larabee may be as against Standish and in favor of whatever as they all are. Chris gets involved in that he glares and growls to get Ezra alone so they can talk without really letting anyone know how he stands (including Ezra, he's just as unsure about Larabee at first).
Chris does his usual "me cave-man boss you do what I say" thing, and Ezra reacts like himself and pisses Chris off, and they have a glare-off, which convinces Chris that Ezra is the man he wants, since the only other 2 people alive that can withstand "the glare" are his 2 best friends, Buck and Vin, and even then neither of them have the gumption (or maybe it's the stupidity) to glare back. So, Chris confuses Ezra with a truly heartfelt job offering, and then ruins the caring vibe by stating that if Standish isn't in Denver on his team inside a week he'd be back to get him.
Needless to say Ez takes the rest of the day off to think it over. He decides to research Larabee and his ATF team, and when I say research I mean deep possibly illegal background searches and what not. He decides it sounds like an above board deal, and possibly just what he needs to get the hell out of Atlanta before he does something he won't regret (how will the agency take his new job? does he get a new assignment? did he quit? did they let him go?).
The Guys:
Chris Larabee - was a navy seal along with Buck, worked major crimes as a lead cop with Buck as his partner, family was murdered while he was away (speaking to a witness out of town? testifying out of town? car bomb? house fire? real crazy cut-up bloody serial killer murder?), went on downward drinking spiral, quit job, "fired" Buck as bff, it was almost losing his ranch home that snaps him back to reality, begins to live again, Travis approaches him "with an offer he can't refuse", goes to get Buck, finds rest of team, goes through undercover agents like a knife through butter.

Vin Tanner - mom died when he was 5, bounced through the adoption system, lived for years on an Indian reserve, joined the army, part of black ops (good way for him to have met Ezra before if it's him who put his file up), out of army framed for murder by Eli Joe, charges dropped became a top rate bounty hunter, met Larabee and Wilmington while on a case in a bar - stopped a bar fight and caught his man, connection with Chris, joined the ATF team, working hard as the closest thing Chris has to a bff these days.

A While After: So, Ezra has been on the team for a few months, they've had some hick-ups and miscommunications (other stories to be told!), and all is not going perfect, but it's much better for Ezra than with the FBI, and better for the team than with any other undercover agent. Here Ezra can trust his back up to do their jobs, and he has at least one true friend on the team (whoever put his file on Chris's desk, but not all the guys know they are friends Ez still likes to keep things personal, plus they like to have secret in-jokes no one else gets).
He has even decided that the team's offers of friendship off site are made in truth and started to take them up on a few (like trips to "the saloon", and a cookout at the ranch?). He hasn't corrected all their misconceptions about his person (can't cook, can't camp, can't ride a horse, only likes opera, only wears suits, is soft/weak, can't kick ass in a fight, isn't rich, is stuck-up, etc.) though because he still has trouble with a few people all of the time (Nathan's judgments, Josiah playing daddy, Buck for ? reason) and with most of the rest of them some of the time (Chris jumps to conclusions, Travis doubts him, the other teams), and feels it's best to have an ace or two (or twenty) up his sleeve for "just in case" times.
The Next Bit: It happens one slow day during part of a slow week nearly a year after Ez is on the team, right after a big case where there was a lot of publicity and team 7 brought down some big player, where Ezra was instrumental and worked closely with one of the guys deep undercover (Buck so they could work their differences out? Vin to deepen the friendship?). The team is really starting to bond and be more family like, even Nathan and Ezra have worked things out so that they still argue and disagree but things are friendly, mostly. There comes a knock, knock, knocking at team seven's door, well not really as they have no real door to their bullpen, but the idea is the same. Travis calls down to Chris telling him to gather the boys up and head into the "ready room" he would be coming down with some big wigs and a new case.
The boys are all excited as they were getting bored silly (Buck was sick of shaking his chicken at JD and was afraid he may have to start to repeat some of his famous girl stories, JD was sick of Buck shaking his chicken at him and asking about his lack of a love life, Josiah was sick of Nathan stealing his office supplies and it was about to come to blows, Nathan was sick of Josiah giving him the evil eye and was wondering where all the staplers and sticky notes on his desk came from, Vin was sick of catching up on paperwork and Ezra stealing his chocolate kisses when he wasn't looking, Ezra was sick on all that chocolate and tired of fixing Vin's paperwork, and Chris was ready to commit team-a-cide to get some peace and quiet).
They are all in the conference room in their usual seats waiting for Travis (read messing around). Chris is at the left head of the table trying not to strangle Buck for bumping him, Buck is on his right knocking JD's Boston Red Sox cap on the ground, Vin on his left eating all his kisses so Ez can't have any, JD is next to Buck ducking per usual, Ezra next to Vin looking kind of green, and Nathan and Josiah are still arguing over supplies while sitting across from Ezra next to JD. In comes Travis, he pauses at the door and then enters feeling extremely embarrassed that his first rate crack team is acting like a bunch of middle schoolers, and behind him comes the big-wigs with the case.
And here is where I am unsure whether to create totally original characters or maybe start a crossover and use already devised ones (like section 1 people, or an alternate version of the pretender's center, or etc.) Anyways whoever they may be come in and Ez gets real still and goes into alert mode, which sets off Vin and Chris immediately and slowly trickles to the rest of the team, until they are all eying the new people with interest and suspicion.
Turns out the "big-wigs" (4 or 5) are from the agency and include some members of Ezra's old agency team (they need a name), not the whole team, just a few (2 or 3) of them along with the agency representatives. And here depending on how Ezra joined the agency the interaction between him and the agency representatives will be like a happy family reunion or a reunion from hell. Ezra will however be pleased to see his old team, as they worked well together and watched each other's backs for years through all kinds of tough and crazy situations.
Ezra plays it cool and doesn't let on he knows anyone as the big-wigs go over the case (as he doesn't know why they are there and if he ought to say anything, need a plausible reason for the agency to be coming out here, protect Ezra? connection to last case?), he ignores the stares coming from his old agency team (as they take in the new him, and try and mess with his head, like annoying older brothers) and from his new ATF team (as they try and figure out how he pissed off the new comers already).
It comes out in the briefing that the agency will work with team 7 only, because of the good stuff they've heard from a member and what they've seen as they scoped/researched the team out. Of course, the "member" is Ezra, and he is quick to correct to "former member" saying something like "I'm retired. I earned my vacation." which sets off the rest of team 7, as most of them don't believe he could ever have been part of such a group (think he doesn't have the skills, he's too young/old, too much a wild card, etc.), and they are pissed that he never told them about it (except his one good friend who already knew, and that was part of why they put his file on Chris's desk).
And thus goes the story onward from there. I have some ideas for more but figured I had better finish my other story first and save this one, lol. If any of you feel inspired to write a story from this, or even just a snippet part (like the Chris-Ezra first meet, or team7-Ezra first meet, etc.) feel free, just let me know so I can read it and add it to my mental fanon for this story AU.
