as sharon and i inch ever closer to taking the cell phone plunge, i now solicit feedback from you, my cell-savvy friends. i would be much appreciative of any opinions you care to share regarding these or other related issues

1a. i agree with dann about the voicemail timestamp thing - it has annoyed me, too. but, like everyone else, i am generally satisfied.
2. i too am on the Maine -> DC calling area thing. can go anywhere within those states and never pay roaming, and there's no LD anywhere in the US. i don't know how many minutes I have, but I know that I never go over... I signed up during some promotional time and I got like twice as many daytime minutes for free - if you can find something like that, jump on it. Having seen other people dissatisfied with their plans, I suggest NOT getting a "Free Nights and Weekends" deal. It is such a hassle. Typically, when they give you Free Nights and Weekends, you get royally screwed on how many daytime minutes you get - and you WILL want to make calls during the day. Don't say "I'll only make LD calls to my mom after 8 - she'll have to understand...". It isn't worth it.
2a. I find my plan to be good. The only time i got screwed was when I was in Georgia for a week. MAJOR roaming fees, batman. Roaming fees are HUGE.
3. i've only ever had reception problems at my parent's house in the hills of CT and in the hills of western mass. but in the hills, you can't expect any carrier to provide great reception.
4. my phone is an audiovox and it is very small and looks like the inside of a luxury car with its faux wood panel. the coolest feature my phone has -- you can program your owns tunes into it for ringtones. it gives you a little staff and you can control pitches, note duration and playback speed. it is fun :O) i am a big fan of the little itty bitty nokia (some family members have it), but it is pretty expensive and never part of a promotion...
5. i usually keep my phone on vibrate, but when i DO set it to ring, I have programmed in the Theme from the Godfather. :O) he he he
5a. I have considered the theme from Batman, that way, when it rings you can say "Uh oh, it must be the commisioner", but I don't know if I'd call that "ideal". Not Ideal - the Nokia ring that EVERYONE has on their phone - if you've ever been in the mall and heard that ring, you probably saw 15 people or so around you in the store check to see if it was theirs.
The only thing I've learned about cell phones is that it is worth it to get yourself covered in terms of how much you will be calling and where you will be going. Charges for roaming, LD, and overtime minutes are where the phone companies get you. They are ridiculously large. I'm not kidding - using an hour more than your alloted daytime minutes can end up doubling your bill for the month.
