The importance of the catalytic converter was to make the change to unleaded fuel. I don't think they would go backward on that choice. Many older engines are still running on it, without the problems commonly told at the time.
That the catalytic converter makes more CO2 than necessary. Upsetting a balance. How will they realize that is a mistake and go backward on that choice ?
