any idiot could drive one

A 1991 photo of Thomas Edison ?

That would be an excellent trick, he died October 18, 1931.

That must have been a typo, it should have been 1901.

Thomas Edison invented the Alkaline Storage Battery. ( and much more )
Sure it would change the transportation industry.
People who don't know what they are doing could then drive, electric starters for car engines.

Before the car engine electric starter, the throttle, the cold start "choke", ignition timing, all needed set just so.
Adjusted by the operator.
In cold weather more fuel is needed, the air is more dense.
Then the engine was cranked by hand to start. A kickback could break the hand, wrist or arm, caused by settings not being proper.

Electric cars seemed like a good idea at the time, any idiot could drive one. No engine to start.
Only the wealthy could afford to buy one.

Then Thomas Edison met and became friends with Henry Ford.

Together they learned what was practical and not practical.
It is not practical to pile up extra weight on the hood of a front wheel drive car. You can not see over it.
Extra weight could be placed in the back over the rear driving wheels.

Now they make gadgets and gizmo's to help the idiots.  ( Tire air pressure drops in cold weather. Cold air contracts. Hot air expands )

  Adding more and more.

Making some required. Taking more control away from the driver and more to computer.

And when they think they need them the most, is when they are actually the least helpful.

Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward....

drive by wire, lane keep assist, vehicle stability control, radar cruise control, anti-lock brake system
