Florida is America's wang in more ways than one. I can say that you're not missing much having not been here.
I feel like I'm in a cultural vacuum most of the time, but I'm guessing that's probably because it's just so hard to find out about event around here (unless it's Monster trucks and NASCAR, which I enjoy... but I enjoy other things too). I find it hard to believe that I work at a University, but there are no operas, plays, concerts, etc. advertised on campus... until you happen to stumble upon the info the day of or days after. It's a very backwards place. Finding high end restaurants for special occasions (you know, with cloth napkins and table lines) has been illusive; I don't think I should have to drive to Disney just to find one... and it not be a real one aside from the prices. Alas.
Now, I do look forward to (I hope) someday getting to the Keys, and the gulf side (I hear the beaches are gorgeous). I guess I'd recommend not visiting Orlando... it's too touristy.
If you're going to come here, don't do it between May and December. UGH. Though not as hot and sticky as a summer in St. Louis. *Shrug* To each his own.
