Thief's Code world (temp mental dump)
Plot hasn't been progressing. I need to work things out. :/ Will set to private when things are worked out better
characters so far
Lain/Nevarmore (24)
Lives in an office. Perpetually poor. High rate of request completion, but tends to do things in a really messy/unplanned manner. Is in it for the money. Killed before, didn't like it, but will do for the appropriate sum of money.
Ruby/Simorgh (30(!))
Somewhat well-to-do. Good at her job, although she doesn't take on super actiony/ninja-y sort of missions any more. Very well-planned. Usually appears cold towards other people, but she's actually pretty nice. If you can get past the tsun to the dere. Lain gets on her nerves very often.
Err/Erratum (technically, somewhere between 10-15; appears mentally and physically 20+)
Is a phone. The main target of the current mission. AI commissioned by some company. Does odd jobs (as he's not a real human, there are a number of things he doesn't have to spend money on, so he doesn't need much money either) Works in a cafe, in his free time he sifts through the great amount of information on the thief network site. And reads up on things on the Internet. Appears to be a nice person, but don't threaten his continued existence. He's very cautious about that.
Due to the nature of his body, he can't:
1. die (not in the normal sense of the word; as long as a backup of him exists, he can be revived on any device with sufficient processing power even if the original device is destroyed)
2. eat/sleep
3. feel tired (infinite stamina lol)
4. scar/undergo physical change (this means, among other things, that he can't cut his hair even though it's always in his face - any external changes etc. are reverted as soon as the system calls a restore of his physical features)
He does feel pain, though.
stdio (22?)
Resident computer geek. Was one of the team responsible for jailbreaking the (current generation of) phones that everyone uses. In his spare time, engages in otaku hobbies. Has a surprisingly wide range of interests in this area. Perpetual deadpan face. Also, provides information about thiefy stuff. Does most of the updates on the cafe messageboard.
Cameron, mostly Camera-san/Yashica (17)
Active little high school kid. Sells photo evidence, spends the money on photographic equipment. She's seen a lot of unsavoury things, but is kind of used to it by now. As a part-time job, takes requests for photo evidence. If stdio is an encyclopedia on the thieves in the city, she's an encyclopedia on the city itself.
?/Diese (36?)
Old hobo-man occasionally seen lurking around in/near the cafe; is actually the owner. Is the reason not many young women visit the cafe despite Err's presence- he pervs on them, although you kind of have the feeling he does it just to see them look uncomfortable...I suspect he's secretly afraid of Ruby, for some reason. Tends to appear drunk most of the time.
My current line of thought regarding him is that at one point in time, in the past, he was a famous and very successful thief...possibly the best there ever was? Who knows.
His summon is incredibly pretty, but it's kind of wasted on him...
Shani, Altan, Flann, ???/Helah (15?)
Girl with split personality. Shani is quiet and timid, Altan is cheerful and pretty cool, Flann is cold to pretty much everyone else. Fourth personality doesn't really have a name, is more than a little bit nuts and kills people in spectacularly bloody ways (mostly involving sharp objects). I'm toying with the idea that this one isn't another personality, but is really Shani herself...
Flann is a registered thief who does only kill jobs. Cleanly, too.
It's pretty weird that she'd be considered experienced at this age, but then I suppose stuff must have happened while she was holed up in wherever she was holed up
vague timeline
10-15? years ago
- development on an AI begins - the aim is to create a simulation of the human brain; first milestone achieved at about 5 years in, AI continues to grow
- first generation of popular phones developed at about 15 years ago, thief community starts building up (not that it didn't exist before, but it was a random, loosely connected mess then), basic structure established by 3 years in, grows rapidly
- Diese was there at the beginning (that would make him about 21 at the time?)

- Lain gives thievery a go; it pays for school fees (17 years old = high school at this point) and other living costs (although his attitude (which gets worse!) means he doesn't get very many jobs)

- Diese retires from thievery (30 years old, 9 years experience, lots of fame and money that he all hides...somewhere) and opens a cafe

- AI escapes from where he was kept, got rid of backups and picked off anyone involved, one by one - leads to some panic throughout the city, but he never gets caught
- company tries to retrieve AI without external help
- AI finds a way to survive in the city, by chance it also gets him a number of connections within the thief community over the years (it's a job in a cafe)
- Diese takes on cafe hoboism while Err does all the hard work
- Lain and Ruby take on a joint mission, where Lain escapes without regard for Ruby's safety. She barely gets away but holds a grudge against Lain for quite a while.
- Shortly afterwards Lain finds the cafe (and conks out on his first visit till Err wakes him up with a sammich - after that, he keeps coming back, hoping he'll get more food and drink)
- stdio gets involved with the thief community

Start of mission
- as a last-ditch effort, the company offers a huge sum of money for the AI's retrieval after some time without activity in this area, but it's not an easy job seeing how there aren't many recent clues to follow
- the AI, Err, hears of this as well and begins to panic - it's pretty much the line between being recaptured and freedom.
- Lain bumps into Ruby again and somehow, brings her to the cafe
First arc
Serial killer arc
- email rumours of a rogue AI make their rounds on the Internet
- at the same time, a serial killer strikes, attacking employees of the company that's involved with making hologram technology
- it's said that the serial killer is the AI, but it's really someone else
- investigation anyway
- after end of arc: Shani also stops by the cafe sometimes - Ruby is very neesan and Err is also very niichan (after she finds out that Err is an AI whose development was linked to her trauma etc., she takes more interest in him)
Endgame? arc
- somehow Err is found out
- somehow this leads to some kind of epic battle between Lain and co. and Err, during which everyone is put into danger
- Camera-san appeals for help via livestream (footage of Err doing something normal people can't do)
- causes swarm of bounty hunters to swoop in
- somehow causes Err to be defeated and carted away by Lain and co.
- except now the company is on their heads because the company knows they're hiding Err
- thought: Err could have his data copied, and then appear to destroy himself in front of the company. Although this would mean that he can't appear as per normal in public afterward...
thoughts
re: tracking Err
- GPS doesn't work now, but past GPS logs are provided (5-year-old GPS logs...)
- for some reason, the company has no idea what he looks like they have a blurry security camera recording of the culprit escaping, and claim that this guy grabbed the phone and ran
- they also don't know what model his phone is (basically, he somehow put himself into a handily available phone so he could get away)
- they know that the serial killings from 5 years ago were his fault, and can provide information regarding those
- the thieves are not told that Err is an AI, only asked to bring the person and the phone (main point being the phone) back
- thieves' POV: find the serial killer from 5 years ago and bring back his phone, preferably with the person himself

- another serial killer emerges?
- either slightly before the mission or coinciding with the mission announcement
- someone who goes around killing a specific group of people (possibly tied to the company) with spectacularly bloody results
- turns out to be hired by...someone...what are the chances it's actually Err who asked... wasn't hired, went out on her own (sort of...snapped?)
- re: killer (current thoughts) - registered thief, does only kill jobs (is fantastic with them, even), is, very incongruously, a young girl with multiple personalities, who may have had ties with the company while she was younger, resulting in some kind of trauma? that resulted in her mental disorder. Was glad (or rather, some of her alters were...) to take on the job with extra blood. Each alter has a different summon, and the attacking ones use different weapons as well.
- eventually get confronted by the group, who were pretty certain she was the one (probably thought the whole idea was fantastic enough - multiple summon forms? Apparent ability to use a number of different weapons? IT'S SO SUSPICIOUS) but welp no
Err
- can be pretty ruthless when it comes to protecting himself, but is mostly reluctant to harm the people he knows
- ends up trying to hide the truth from the people on the mission for at least until the expiry date
- also tries to figure out what they know
- attempts to kill, probably...if he was the one to hire the girl, he wouldn't ask her to deal with his acquaintances, he'd do it himself...but then he'd probably have problems actually killing them (existing idea: he tried to kill Lain and failed)
- those he killed the first time round were people who were sent after him and people who directly knew of his existence (as far as he could reach, though this is not many people)
- points of suspicion:
1. Owns two phones, one of which is a rare model he never uses (probably accidentally dropped both at the same time) yet makes it a point to keep on full charge as much of the time as possible
2. He appeared on the scene at the time the first serial killings occurred - while this might be dismissed as coincidence, it should be noted that he's not willing to speak about anything that happened before he appeared
3. Takes too much interest in the mission, and probably appears to have more information than the company provided (might have let slip, or intentionally talked about it?)
4. Apparently didn't have a childhood, or something. Also, is never seen to eat/drink. Things that you'd expect normal people to do/know about...maybe he makes up some lies, or something, but doesn't actually understand. Maybe it gets brushed off as some eccentricity, but after some intuitive leap made by the thieves (that they're chasing an AI), he becomes very suspicious.
the company
- it's hard to continue without working this out- something that endorses/commissions research on people?
- not necessarily direct human experimentation, although that's a possibility...
- Err's creation was tasked mostly to a brilliant engineer
- company that works on hologram technology, has ties with the company that produces the phones
- apparently, conduct studies on people in order to develop accurate personalities for their...idk what kind of AI engineering experiments
- this involves studying people with psychiatric disorders/inducing trauma
evidence/clues (things that the company provides that are at least marginally important)
- bodies from both first round and second round killings mostly had knife wounds (although the second round ones were rather more mutilated)
- first victim was the engineer (something that the team failed to notice at the beginning; this guy was one of stdio's idols? May have had a hint about what he was working on at the time, but no direct access to the computer(s)?)
- GPS logs reflected Err's travel paths at the time, which...may or may not be useful...since they're 5 years old, it's hard to say if they're still relevant. The logs were cut off pretty quickly, once Err discovered it was how he was being hunted down.
- Internet access logs? I think it's possible for ISPs to track this information from users...of course, he doesn't use that phone to access the Internet any more (does it on the other one, which has no connection to his identity as an AI)
AI
- I subscribe to the idea that it has to be built from small things...
- pretty much a simulation of a whole bunch of neurons firing
- can't consciously build the personality, it has to be grown - the result can be shaped in the way you can shape a child, but you can't have full control over it
- did not have normal human instincts and reactions at the beginning - just grew with whatever knowledge he picked up, so while he was disturbingly unnatural at the beginning, it was fixed in time
- in order to make him more humanlike, he was given a holographic body with human senses (although I can't imagine why he would have a sense of taste and a one-way digestive system at the same time)
- assume that in this world, devices have enough processing power to take care of all this. TECHNOLOGY IS WONDERFUL
- for simplification purposes, consider the AI to be a very big program
- it saves backups at regular intervals, in case of some failure (this is unknown to the AI himself)
- it also restores the AI's physical appearance at regular intervals, so that the holographic body doesn't become too damaged
- restoring from backups appear like timeskips to the AI - this can be very unnerving
- it's possible to "clone" the AI by simply copying the program or restoring one of his backups on another device - this is also a very unnerving thought
- there was some kind of an attempt to create a perfect person, but seeing how he turned out, that was likely a failure
Cafe
- located in a quiet place
- actually resembles a restaurant/bar more than a cafe, but the owner insists on calling it a cafe (well, it serves mostly coffee)
- the cafe is run by Diese, ex-thief, who now lazes around while Err does most of the work (though, at least, it seems Err will take over the cafe when Diese decides to retire)
- cafe is neutral grounds for all thieves- even though he doesn't look like it, Diese can and will beat you up if you try anything funny in his cafe
- Lain and co. are regulars, Err helps out
- message board on the wall that is usually stuck with notices about specific jobs (interesting/well-paying/urgent ones) - it's a better place to look than the Internet board, since the virtual one contains a lot of junk
- of course, there's one about the current mission right next to the target himself, which makes for incredible irony
- Lain comes by to bug Err and wheedle free drinks out of him, occasionally crashes his room
- Ruby comes by to talk and have coffee (Lain probably told her about the place at around the start of the mission)
- stdio comes by to drink coffee in great amounts, leech off the free wireless, and update/keep up to date with the message board
- Camera-san comes by to be Camera-san at everyone. Much unwanted photography is involved

It would probably have been on accident, so Shani...attempts to apologize profusely, probably switching out to Altan who is all :| (and didn't get to eat the donuts) and will probably offer to reimburse her for the donuts. Depending on Camera-san's mood, she'll either be fine with that, or engage in good-natured blackmailing...
3. 6 and 2 are in a steel-cage wrestling match. Who wins?
If it's just wrestling...I suppose Err wins?
4. Everybody's chilling and watching TV. Would 4 rather watch TV with 1 or 3, and why?
Both would be fine, though I think she likes Ruby more. Lain might fall asleep from boredom, though this would mean excellent photo opportunities...
5. Who would win at a game of hide and seek? Why? Who was the best hider, and who was the best seeker
Best hider:
Probably Shani/Altan (not sure which, though leaning towards the second). I was considering Lain as an option until I realised hide-and-seek doesn't allow the hider to run away after s/he's found - he'd be "best escaper" rather than "best hider", otherwise.
Best seeker:
Ruby or Diese. They...just...know.
6. 9 and 8 are in a dis-off. Who wins?
stdio tries and fails. Diese laughs his head off.
7. 1, 2, and 3 are in a decathlon. Who wins gold, silver, and bronze?

Anyway Lain suggests instant noodles since that's about the only thing he knows how to cook.
I'm not too sure what the final dish will be, hahah...but it'd probably be all Diese's work (the actual cooking, I guess...provided there's any good reason to make this dish in the first place)...from a recipe found online...and I guess it'd be kind of tasty.
10. 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9 go out drinking together. What craziness happens~

Err doesn't drink, Shani and Altan are underage. Chances are, Err's just there to...watch...and tidy up the mess afterwards...Shani/Altan just got swept up somehow, although Altan would be pretty game.
stdio...I have no idea. I suppose he wouldn't drink too much, since he'd be returning to his regularly scheduled hacking afterwards, most probably...Diese would be drinking the most. And yelling at everyone in general.
11. 3 and 6 are playing a strategy game. Who wins? What tactics did they use?
Ruby and Altan. Ruby should win, with a lot of other backup plans that didn't get put into place...she strategizes a lot. Altan relies on brute force and sheer luck...
12. What would 7 prefer to drink: Water, soda, or beer?
Flann. Water.
13. 4 and 1 are in a duel and get to pick a gun or a sword. Which do they pick?
Camera-san and Lain. ???

I highly doubt he'd bring anyone to the movies without any ulterior motive...and the rest of the crew would just find it incredibly weird. Anyway. Probably Ruby. Chances are, they're planning something, and going to the movies is just a ruse or something...snacks, probably not, but maybe drinks...
15. 9, 2, and 6 are robbing a bank. How does it go down?
Err, Altan, hobo Diese...of all the characters to have picked...these are the ones who aren't active thieves LOL
Ideal solution: hobo Diese -> conman Diese, smooth-talks everyone, makes the bank hand over the cash willingly and happily, Err and Altan don't actually do anything. Maybe they help to carry off the money.
16. 5 gets to make the 'hero's choice', in that 1 and 10 are being held hostage by the villain and only one can be saved. Who does 5 choose to save?

Lain whines at Flann's lack of compassion and saves himself.

Assuming, assuming stdio can even find someone to get married to...it would probably be Diese...or maybe Ruby...but more likely, Diese.

I would think he'd be running away from the battle rather than stepping into it, but...probably stdio with his overwhelming firepower...
20. Which two characters are most likely to be best friends? Worst enemies?
Sigh this is pretty redundant seeing how they're all from the same universe and I'd have considered this before.
I'm not sure about best friends. It might be Ruby/Shani or Ruby/Camera-san (Ruby takes care of everyone sigh) or Camera-san/Shani.
It might also be Lain/Err, although this is more a case of Lain being clingy...
I don't think any of them would be worst enemies with each other (speaking from the bottom of their hearts) but on the surface, Lain and Ruby. It's kind of...good-natured arguing, I guess...at the moment...

Err? Uh, not particularly special, I'd think...
4. Growing on the war thing, let us fantasize: [6] is a brave soldier on the front lines, fighting for...er, whatever cause he/she finds suitable to fight for. Anyway, everyone knows that war enforces rationing. [6] realizes that--gasp!--his/her war ration has been changed from mundane victuals to absolutely indigestible SPAM! How do they react?
Altan...once again, ignoring the fact that he's not nearly old enough...eats it anyway, sob.

7. All of a sudden, [10] has been sucked into a pocket of space/time that has no reason for existence and has been catapulted back in time to their childhood. [10] watches some parts of their childhood as a spectator. Does [10] experience a nostalgia of sorts? Pain? Hilarity? Indifference?
Conman Diese...this is interesting HAHAH he's the only one whose younger days I haven't considered yet...it'd probably be a feeling best summed up as "lol".
8. Let's warp things a little in the sci-fi direction! A replica of [9] has been built as an evil robot hell-bent on wreaking ultimate havoc on the civilized world. Where would Robot [9] strike first? Would the real [9] try to stop their metallic twin?
Diese-bot?! Let's start with the company building. The real Diese would probably wait until enough lols are had before doing anything about it...
9. [1] and [6] are turned into animals. Which ones?
Well they're pretty much assigned animals to begin with...Lain -> raven, Altan...some kind of a fish, maybe a shark or something.
10. [8] has abruptly been endowed with the vexing responsibility of keeping the world safe from certain doom. (Robot [9] perhaps, if living [9] failed to stop it) What fate will befall the world, and how will [8] stop its demise?
stdio vs. Diese-bot would be the right way to deal with the problem, I think. Blow it up. Bring on the weapons...
11. Uh-oh. [3] is in trouble with the Mafia! What for? How do they handle the sudden prospect of being chased by pinstripe-clad men wielding machine guns? (If [3] is a Mafia character, he's betraying his Family.)
Ruby? Might have been some responsibility shoved onto her, or something...whatever the reasons, she pulls strings to get herself off the hook, or something similar.
12. [2] discovers that he/she is a god and has billions of worshipers in a parallel dimension. Do this find this good? Weird? Funny? Horrifying?
Be well and entirely weirded out by this. And would like to go back to his original direction, thanks very much, but it's really embarrassing.
13. Characters [1-5] all go out partying at night. Where do they go, and what do they do? Or do they even agree on anything?

If not for the fact that Lain's in the party, Ruby would have invited them to well...some higher-end place, probably, but welp. It probably just ends up being the cafe. Nothing particularly interesting happens until Lain and Ruby start fighting, Err has to stop them, Camera-san goes trigger-happy with her camera, and Shani...sits around feeling awkward.
14. In the meantime, characters [6-10] decide to travel overseas. Which country do they go to, and why? For food? Romance? The intrigue of mystery surrounding foreign deodorant scents?

Ignoring the impossibility of Altan and Flann being separated from Shani-
Altan would be happy just to be able to go overseas, Flann doesn't really care, stdio would want to go on some kind of a geek tour, Diese would probably be the one paying and be on some kind of a business trip or something of the sort. I'm not sure where they'd be going...
15. Cue an Anne Frank-like scenario: [7] is locked in an attic for five years and must write a diary in order to document their affliction. What do they write about? How do they survive with only limited food supplies? How do they occupy their inordinate free time?
Ignoring the fact that Flann would be the least likely of the three to be writing...it would probably be things regarding survival (rationing, current living status, possible methods of escape...)...and well I guess the three of them would talk to relieve boredom, or something.
16. Thanks to a strange nuclear accident involving radioactive waste and slime that smelled oddly like chicken noodle soup, [1] now has psychic abilities unrivaled by man. What abilities are they specifically? Does [1] use them for good or evil?

Er. Mind-reading -> find it fascinating for a short period of time, discover he doesn't really care about what people think, get bored and pretty much ignore it until he needs it. Possibly to escape from whatever.
17. [9], [10], and [5] are a singing trio that embarks into the daunting world of Hollywood records, cocaine parties, and plenty of boyfriends/girlfriends. How do these three characters handle the fame?
Diese and Shani uhhhhhhhhh. Shani would rather not be there in the first place. Diese is more interested in the people relations part. He was pretty famous himself, come to think about it.
18. [7] and [2] fall madly and irrevocably in love. Unfortunately, [7] is actually a flesh-devouring zombie! What does [2] do to combat this?
Flann and Err?! This is plain weird.
Err would probably desperately look up solutions to the problem (how does one cure zombies?) online.
19. What is the dream job of [3]?
I'm not sure. She'd like something more settled now. I guess she's pretty contented with being a thief and taking on small easy jobs.
20. [9] and [4] are forced to compete in the Olympics together. Which country is either representing? Which categories do they qualify to participate in? Do they medal? Or fail miserably?

............well they don't live on Earth...they're...not particularly outstanding in any sport...
21. Well, guess what? For some reason that defies logical explanation and perhaps the laws of an apple falling on Newton's head, [6] is now a stealthy super ninja. [10] is their arch rival. They engage in a duel to the death. How does that go? Who wins? Do any of the other characters inconveniently show up and turn the fight into a battle royale?
Altan vs. Diese?
In terms of fighting ability, I think Altan would win...if anyone else showed up, it would be to stop them from fighting.
22. [8] has decided to write a play, so he/she does. What would the play be about? Which of the 10 characters would most likely be in it.

It would probably be a sarcastic half-joking attempt to write a play about the cafe. Or, the possibility that Err is secretly a Gundam.

Err, Camera-san, stdio -> Ruby, since they don't know much about Flann and Ruby generally takes care of everyone anyway.

Not...really...probably be quietly worried.

Right, of all the characters to get paired up- I'm not sure whether it's better or worse to have the pairings make sense.
Dark-haired, probably slightly wavy hair, good-looking and well-groomed kid. Also, would be very, very good at talking to/manipulating people. In short: terrifying.
6. If 5(Shani) was forced into a banana suit, what would he/she do and how would 4(Camera-san) react?
Shani would switch out to Altan, who'd just find it very awkward and stay in a quiet place until he can get out of it. Camera-san would be taking lots of photos.
7. If 6(Altan) went insane and attacked 3(Ruby) with a rusty pumpkin knife, what would 9(Diese) do and who would survive?
Anything within physical ability, probably (he'd do it for most of the cast, really), although Ruby is pretty fit herself, so he might just try to distract Altan while waiting for help to arrive, if it doesn't come before either of the two can do anything about them.

This is hard. Hobo Diese is the creeper (while not being seriously creeper, but it's still kind of disturbing anyway), so stdio, I guess.

I...don't think there's any particular reason for it. Flann wouldn't particularly care, if it's not serious.

Not likely (both to the plotting and telling), but if Camera-san were to hear about it, she'd tell him, I think.
