A decade later, armed with years of scientific research, patents and over $200 million in venture funding, including backing from investors like chip giant Intel Corp. INTC -2.89% , Plastic Logic is on the verge of launching its first commercial product: a seemingly well-timed electronic reader, the Que, for business users.

But the product has suffered from delays and is priced on the high end of the spectrum. It is expected to face an uphill battle in the nascent but growing market now awash in competitors, all vying for a piece of the market pioneered by Amazon.com Inc.'s AMZN +0.25% Kindle. See story on the growing market for e-readers.

The latest and most formidable entry, is of course the sleek and full-color iPad from Apple Inc. AAPL -0.05% , which has sold over 500,000 units in its first three weeks on the U.S. market. See Apple iPad news here.

"They have a lot to prove," said Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst with Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass. "With an unknown brand and an astronomical price point, I am skeptical that it will sell."

When Que was officially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Plastic Logic executives said the first two models will be priced at $649 for a WiFi only model, and $799 for a device that runs over AT&T Inc.'s T -0.14% 3G cellular network. That would make it far and away the most expensive e-reader to come on the market; the Kindle, by contrast, sells for $259, and Sony's cheapest model is $199.

The Que would even carry a premium to the iPad, which starts at $499 for a WiFi-only version. The most expensive iPad, with combined WiFi and 3G capabilities, is expected later this month at $829.

Plastic Logic's reader is different, though, from what's currently on the market. The Que does not use glass for the display screen, which can break or scratch. Instead, it has one million plastic transistors powering its display, representing the first use of flexible organic transistors in a consumer product.

Developing semiconductors using plastic polymers rather than metal oxides has long been a holy grail of researchers, because it will eventually let companies like Plastic Logic create flexible electronic devices. But it has been difficult to achieve in the past because of the poor electrical conducting ability of the transistors.

So will this technological feat make enough of a difference so that the Que can stand out in an array of mostly cheaper models? According to a fourth-quarter Forrester Research study, the number one concern among consumers considering buying an electronic book reader was durability.

Still, Epps is not convinced of Plastic Logic's chances at success.

"I'm afraid that the actual launch of this device is going to be a non-event for consumers," she said.

Plastic Logic executives insist that they are not competing head to head with the iPad. The Que is aimed at business users who want to replace paper.

"It was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of that professional with a large, thin, very lightweight display that's perfect for hours of immersive reading," said Betty Taylor, a spokeswoman for Plastic Logic, in an email. She said company executives were hunkering down trying to get the Que out to meet the June 24 pre-order date and were not available for interviews. Both models are sold out via pre-orders. More Ques will be available sometime this summer.

The delay, after showing the Que publicly, first at the All Things Digital conference in May 2009 and again at CES in January, has me wondering if the device will come out on time. When I saw a demo last May, the Que was slow to open a document or to turn a page. Hopefully that sluggishness has been fixed.

"One silver lining may be that if they keep delaying the launch, the cost of components may come down," said Ross Rubin, an executive director with the NPD Group. "They may be able to offer it at a lower price."

Plastic Logic has signed a two-way partnership with Barnes & Noble Inc. BKS +0.11% , which will sell the Que in its physical retail stores and online, in addition to its consumer-focused Nook. The bookseller will also be the default electronic store on the Que. Plastic Logic also has various newspaper partnerships.

The company is really gearing to the corporate and government markets, where sales people or technicians have to carry around reams of price sheets, catalogs, contracts, or technical documentation, or students who could use electronic text books.

Amazon, so far, has not fared as well with its larger, higher-priced model of the Kindle called the DX, which is aimed at students and costs $489.

"Certainly in the consumer market, it's a tough price point," NPD's Rubin said of Plastic Logic's pricing. "The Kindle DX has not seen the success of its smaller sibling, because, in part, of the higher price."

Plastic Logic may be targeting business users. But consumers now often influence corporate tech buyers, or indeed pay for their own gadgets for use at both home and work. In that scenario, it's hard to see Plastic Logic getting a real foothold with consumers at these price points.
It wouldn't be the first time in Silicon Valley that a novel technology was trounced upon by a cheaper, "good enough" option

Тhe QUE proReader was a first generation e-reader product from Plastic Logic. The final version of the product was presented during a public event at CES January 2010. The product was cancelled on August 2010 without ever shipping, with the firm noting that "We recognize the market has dramatically changed, and with the product delays we have experienced, it no longer make sense for us to move forward with our first generation electronic reading product

In September 2011 the company announced Plastic Logic 100 aimed to bring e-textbooks to Russian schools.
